Custom Assets in 3DS Max

Hi, I am a 3rd year Game design student, currently finishing my studies and researching a future career. I was wondering if anyone has any games industry experience or advice relating to 3DS Max, especially with regards to Hammer level design.

My main area of interest is the importing of 3D assets into game engines (especially using Hammer).

P.S. My first project after uni will be a singleplayer Half-Life 2 mod, hence the relevance to this forum.
 
do you have any experience in making halflife 2 mods?
 
I have some experience making custom levels, but no REAL modding experience. However, through building custom levels, I have developed a broad skillset.

The most important skill I still have to develop is creating, animating and importing 3D models, which will play a major part in my mod (for set-pieces).

So does anyone have advice, or any good links to get me started on that?
