Custom Textures Not Showing In Hammer

My custom textures aren't showing in Hammer. I've followed like 3 turorials now, including the one here. They show up as purple/black blocks. I have both VTF and VMT files... well they're all over the place now I don't even know where I started anymore.

Im having the same problem. When I go into hammer.....all my custom materials and textures are black and purple checkerd ? WTF! plz help me some 1.
