Custom texturing with alphas?

Hi all
I am currently working on a project for half life 2 and i was wondering how to make a texture where the alpha can be "painted" in hammer. Is there a tutorial or someone that can help me with this? thanks a ton!

hmmm... seems this search is harder than i thought. couldnt find any on wiki or searching these forums and snarkpit has been down forever. guess ill keep looking. if anyone can help, please let me know!
 
wow, thanks for the link. forgot to check editlife. durka durka. anyways, i was also wonder if source supports alpha displacements. What i mean is, can you create an alpha displacement map, say with photoshop, in your texture that you can use to paint a displacement. I saw this feature in the unreal3 engine video and was wondering if source was capable of this. I hope i clarified this technique im talking about.

^ i dont think this is possible, displacements arent heightmap based objects.
