D3-w/pk4 uncompressed,sound mod broken

Anyone that has searched for info on Doom 3 performance will have come across the trick to:
unzip pk4 000-0004files to increase game performance.
Has anyone else done this besides me?
While it did help some, and any additionall performance boost is welcome
none of my drop-in mods work anymore and I can't seem to get them to work.
I particularly would like to get a good sound mod working again, I really can't get into the game with the sound effects the way id created the game. The guns in particular sound really lame IMHO.
How do I get my sound mods I downloaded to work with the pk4 files uncompressed?

Uncompress the contents of the new pk4's over the old files?

Thats the way to do it I'd guess.

Once uncompressed you can view Doom3 pk4 files as folders, and its very organized.

The sound mods are pk4 files too, and after decompressing, its just a ton of sounds in no folder, so I would have to figure out what each sound is by the name, place it in the correct folder, and it seems like whoever made the mods used thier own naming convention so I don't think doom 3 would even load the sounds unless I renamed them.

Im in the dark as to why doom 3 would load and use the sounds by droping a mod into its base folder, but once you unpack pk4 000-004 it will no longer load mods that are pk4 files or otherwise.
*Anyone deep into tampering with Doom3 have my answer please?

NOTE: at this point I don't recommend unziping Doom3's pk4 files.

Im sure you can use mods, even though you unpacked Doom3's content (textures sounds etc.)

The gun sounds in the game are phenomanal but the firing
sounds could be ALOT better.

I have replaced 1 sound but thats about all that I could find after unpacking D3's content,
the pistol gun fire and shotgun fire sounds are hidden and
they aren't in the sound/weapons folder like with the rest of gun sounds.
Any help how to do this or I guess
WARNING:Im not 100% sure if it even helps performance to unpack the files(Not Recommended). I don't notice a difference, although there may be one.

It doubles the load time in between levels.

I can't figure out how to easily use any sound mods

That disables multiplayer, not that the MP is anything to write home about. But I dont actually suggest unzipping the pk4's you might want to reinstall. The amount of performance this actually saves is trivial and probably not worth disabling mods and multiplayer.
