demo will be out on the 30th on gamespot.

This story-based space adventure features more than 300 systems, six unique races, and an immersive storyline. During the game, you can apply various upgrades to your ship, DarkStar One.

this is being made by ascaron (who created sacred, a good rpg) and cdv software (no idea..).

2 previews and 5 gameplay videos, though i would probably just watch 1 of the gameplay videos, they don't really show off anything.

seems like a middle man between freelancer and x2/x3.

CDV refers to the game as "Freelancer done right," which is perhaps why there seems to be a ton of content in this game. In addition to including the aforementioned 400 solar systems, the game lets you customize the Darkstar One with more than 300 different modules, and the ship will get bigger and more formidable the further you get into the game.

i <3 space games so i'll definently try the demo.

Looks interesting. I picked up Freelancer at a bargain bin and really enjoyed it.

I read a review in a Dutch gaming magazine and that wasn't too positive. There isn't a lot of difference between the different sectors, there is only one pilotable ship (yes, one) and the NPC's are too Jar Jar Binks (literal quote). I am gonna try the demo tho coz I enjoyed Freelancer immensely.

Um, sorry, Darkstar is the name of the ship in Doom 3.

FAIL.

Doom 3 didn't coin "Darkstar".

And CDV? Don't they generally pump out pure crap?

Wow, looks like a really good game. Seems like something a Freelancer fan would like....like me :D

I can't say it's an original name, but since you seem to know - if id didn't coin it, then who did?

Nevermind, don't even bother answering that:

http://www.google.com/search?q=darkstar

Results 1 - 10 of about 5,480,000 for darkstar.

5 and a half million hits for Darkstar

lol

Generic. But it was cool in D3 if you ask me. I wouldn't have named my game that though.

Heh...in my favorite fantasy series, "Darkstar" is the nickname for an emo knight named Gerold. He is most lolworthy in his role as an amusingly pathetic minor villain.

Didn't they produce (or at least publish) the Sudden Strike Franchise

I'm still waiting for the next Elite game

Or at least waiting for Infinity: Quest for Earth

I got the Gamespot email this morning about it. I was hoping it was more like X2/3 than Freelancer... meh.

hah, same, that's what introduced me to the game and caused me to make this thread. ;)

i've been reading through some more info and looking @ more media and honestly, it looks quite mediocre.. can't wait for my new pc so i can play the demo.

Ahem. Excuse me everybody.

I think we all know who has rights to the name "Darkstar."

Yeah that's right. It's me.

EDIT: Actually I took the name from a Grateful Dead song called Darkstar. Which, I might add, predated the ship in Doom 3 AND Niel Manke's HL1 mod AND the nickname for some emo knight named Gerold. The Dead beat them all to it by like 25 years.

Just played the demo. It's Freelancer with better looks and dito handling. And it looks very pretty. Not like X3 but still very nice.
Screen
The UI is slightly more cluttered and less intuitive, but still pretty much noob friendly. If you played Freelancer you can hop in right away. I haven't found the auto pilot yet, but the Dark Star 1 flies very stable so you can just point your ship in the right direction and let go of your mouse. A nice addition is the time compression button. Combat is - again - just like Freelancer, but with better handling. Pyrotechnics look pretty and the sound is just what you would expect. I'll prolly get this since I am a sucker for space games.

I made Movie of me docking at a trade station. The bump you hear is the cargo container I'm tugging crashing into me when I reverse thrusters. I hope I haven't broken anything, hehehh

Sounds cool. So there's just one ship but you can customize it a lot?

Yeah, it's supposed to be super customisable. The people that made this also did Sacred, a hack 'n' slash game á la Diablo. Your ship can be customized very much like in a rpg.

Ooh, Sacred was supposed to be good but really buggy. Already d/ling the demo.

It seems ok. It's fairly simplistic and the combat isn't quite as fun as Freelancer. I hate how they tell you where to shoot to lead the target, ridiculous. But other than that it's an alright game.

I don't think I'd buy it though.

Didn't CDV do that 'Halo-killer' game... Breed?
Hah, that game was a joke.

Downloading the demo with extremely low hopes.

Well, I watched my cousin play Sacred for a good 6 hours or so, and it was pretty awesome. But I don't know a thing about CDV.

Sacred blew chunks, hopefully this turns out nothing like it.

Getting it via gamershell as well :)

Wasn't Darkstar the name of a ship that had aliens on it in some startrek game? (elite force)??

I'm sure the name DarkStar is used all over, think someone earlier said it was the name of a ship in D3 as well.

they made breed ? that game was horrible.

.. and sacred was fairly awesome.

i'm hoping this game outs out to be good, or at least 'finishing' worthy because there are very few space sims. D:

I remember breed, the demo for the game seemed like it had so much potential, what a major let down that was when it got reviews of 50% or worse D:

So I aquired a copy of this game. Tis not for the casual space explorer many and if not all the systems are nigh identical in nature and as your progress you can "jump" between systems until you finally wind up with a zpm jump drive that allows you to jump to any system you want. Personally I liked the trade lane system freelancer had, the jump drives destroyed a part of the universes connectivity imo.

kyo, so in general, is it good or bad ? is it fun/good like freelancer and how is it compared to x3 ? :)

The story is okay I didn't really get into it, theres really no exploration to speak of and after defeating a few waves of pirates you have godly weapons.

It's a dumbed down version of Freelancer although I liked how you could customize your ship to make it faster, more agile or just plain tough. It's a decent game I'll grant it that. The voice acting may get on peoples nerves though.

Darkstar One is nowhere near the same league as X3 by anyones standards.
