Darkstar One

There's a thread on this a day or two back, can't be bothered to link it but it's there ;)

I still have the demo on my HD but I haven't bothered to install it, I'll get to it... someday.

Oops!

Use the damn search feature PhantomDesign, you freaking noob, lol. Oh, well, what does everyone else think so far?

Seems kind of average to me. The combat is ridiculously simple, even more than Freelancer because they tell you exactly where to shoot to lead the target. Also it's just not very much fun. I uninstalled before I finished the demo.

It seems very shallow and simple.

Freelancer tells you exactly where to shoot as well. Freelancer's combat is pretty much as simple as you can get, short of shooting for you. I enjoy both games though.

Basically what he said. It's good clean space fun. Altho the systems are a lot smaller and samey than Freelancer. That sucks.

It does? Because I specifically remember having to lead the target yourself and adjust depending on the speed your weapons fire. In this game they actually put a box out in the middle of space that you just click on and it shoots the ships for you.

As far as I can tell the game is even simpler than Freelancer without the clean interface and shooter gameplay that's actually fun. It's like taking all the worst aspects from both Freelancer and X3.

It's coming off like I hated the game but I didn't, I just thought it was very mediocre. I just don't see any reason at all to play this game when X3 and Freelancer exist.

Freelancer was fun, but so ****ing reppppppetttettttive! I mean I guess it was ok for one game, but a second game with the same type of repettiveness would be a waste of time.

What I really want to see is Descent 4. Descent 1 and 2 were so kick-ass! Descent 3 was really good too, but I think they tried too hard to make it more "realistic," which ruined some areas like the city levels. Descent 1 & 2 multiplayer was so much fun!

I remember Freelancer has varying projectile speeds, so that aiming cursor isn't always perfect. However, it was there to provide you a rough estimate where to aim which is always handy.

Speaking of which, I really need to get started on X3. If only the learning curve wasn't quite so steep...

It's shameful that I'm the only one here that's mentioned Elite, Frontier: Elite 2 is still the best space game there is imo if you're ok with older games, besides it basically made the space trading-fighting genre what it is today.
I demand that you all play it or I'll send Ian Bell at you!
It's awsome landing on a planet(In realtime, no loading times) and just sitting watching the moon, planets, sun, clouds move along the sky.. I hope in the future another game like Frontier: Elite 2 can be made with similiar but modern tech :)

The demo is pretty fun (I dont play many of these type of games though). I'd get the full version.

What is X3?

X3: Reunion review

In short, the game's one of (if not the most) the ambitious space games out there. Think some crazy financial sim + space + buy and own fleets + hundreds of space ships + buy space stations + own factories + rob / transport cargo / trade.

Oh and the graphic's are very spiffy.

i've played alot of space sims (desecent freespace 2 and it's expansion are my favourite) but i've never heard of this elite game.

are you talking about this one: http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/frontier/

wow, when you said old i didn't picture it being that old but i'm willing to play it if i can find it.. is it abandonware ?

edit: i missed the obvious 'download' link on the page i linked to but it says £5 for registration if i play for > 30 days.. :( actually, this game is probably so old something as easy as changing my clock, or edit some file should be fine.

Yeah, Frontier: Elite 2 is great, but a bit hard to get running under Windows, Frontier First Encounters(Elite 3) is also good.:)
It's old but very technologically impressive for its day..

That's a good review. EG's conclusion says it all really:
X3 is a game that takes its time and demands a lot from you. If you're looking for a pacey polished space adventure where you never have to refer to the manual or post a query on the official forum then you're almost certainly better off with something like Freelancer. Bolder souls, as interested in commerce as they are in combat, can buy with much greater confidence.

This game inspired me to fire up the good old Escape Velocity: Nova again.

I really enjoyed EVNova but the pricetag is a bit steep imo.. 30 bucks..:\
Atleast for me right now, I've spent my last money on The Ship!
