I'm trying to help out a family member here. This is the computer I want to upgrade:

http://www.memorystock.com/memory/HewlettPackardPaviliona1100y.html

As you can see on that page it came with only 256MB RAM

It has an empty slot and I have a stick of

Infineon HYS64D32301HU-5-B

which is labeled as 256MB,DDR,400,CL3 PC3200U-30331-C2

So can I mix them? DDR2 with DDR? Looking at the link above, it isn't really clear to me if the computer will accept DDR.

This is just an email, web browser, and word processing computer, so it doesn't need the greatest things, but it desperately needs more RAM.

no. DDR2 has more pins

yeah sorry, I think I asked the same question like a year ago, when someone else gave me some old RAM.

Thanks.

Every type of RAM is incompatible with each other. Mostly because of different pins and sockets. :p

^This

Also, I'm not positive, but I believe I've heard in the past that even if you could mix RAM speeds, it'll only round down to the lowest denominator.
I think maybe that only applies between DDR2 and DDR3 though. I'm not sure if they have the same number of pins or not.

It's generally best to stick with RAM that has the same speeds and latencies.

I haven't messed around with PC hardware in a long time though. :p

Yes, you'll also want to put one stick/channel. Most boards are limited this way. ;(

RTFM.

I find it interesting that this computer supports up to 2GB. I think 1GB would be fine and could be had for $15-$20

It seems outrageous to sell a computer with 256MB. 512MB would have been fine for XP. What did they save $1 to 3 cost to HP? Yet it makes the computer perform like a retarded asshole. Talk about stripped down.

Dance Dance Revolution TWO!??!!

OH **** YES GIMME GIMME!
