So my noisy power supply fan (inside the unit) finally died on me.. now my question is (since its pretty difficult to remove the old fan) can I just mount a fan to the bottom of my PSU below the dead fan and be just as effective? Or do I just need to buy a completely new powersource?

The powersource itself is only a couple years old.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had this happen once and I considered rigging something up but eventually just decided against it and bought a new psu. If you are going to mount a new one at least remove the old one so it doesn't block the airflow. It probably won't be just as effective but it may be enough to keep it from overheating. Alternately you could perhaps just splice the wires (I think the old fan is hard-wired into the psu).

yeah taking apart a PSU to replace the dead fan is easy....mind yourself though. Capacitors can KILL!

so DON'T touch...but like JFry said just splice the wires powering the fan to the ones powering your replacment. As far as switching the two, iirc all that will happen is the fan will spin the opposite direction.

If your powersupply has a power switch on the back, you can turn that switch off, so the powersupply is off, then hold the power button on your PC to drain the capacitors.

EDIT: You know what, you could just unplug the powersupply from the wall outlet, then hold your computer power button to drain it
