decals vs overlays

ok i previously didnt know what overlays were (not that i imply that i know now), but i happened to find that button on the toolbar. As far as I know, decals and overlays are the same thing, only overlays have a higher res. Is this correct? If so, I won't bother replacing all my decal work with overlays.

Overlays also give you control over the scale and rotation of the image. If you don't need to alter these things, go with decals, since they're cheaper to render.

Also, overlays can adjust correctly to the brushes, like stairs and also on displacement maps.
