Would it be possible to add more gore to Half Life 2, like when a grenade went off near a combine their limbs got torn off? Or get bullet holes riddled in their bodies? It must be possible to code it, but would likely be very hard.

I'm assuming you could just release the individual limbs (model has to be edited) as ragdolls when the combine dies, dunno if that's as easy as it sounds.

It's not. The zombie halves are separate models and are hard-coded up the wazoo.

There are two ways of doing this.

Easy(worse looking) Make a model of all arms/legs/body, and code them to bee commected, looking pretty crappy.

Hard(better looking) Make a model of the speprate limbs, and a several combind models with every combination of limbs off(really not worth it)

this would be something that would be very interesting to see. It would be a mod unto itself. I defenitely think its worth it.

Its hard to suspend disbelief when you nail some dude in the face with a rocket propelled grenade and his corpse lands somewhere without a single scratch on him.

Now, rather than gibbing, there is a better option, i think.

it will probably be harder, but better looking. it would involve somehow making versions of the model with damaged areas. and have those models replace a character when that area is damaged in the killing shot. its the same principle behind the zombies cut in half/headcrab pop off system.

like you can model a few different versions of a combine soldier with the head all mangled in different ways or perhaps gone all together. Perhaps model a version of the combine that is split in 2 halves. or perhaps a few combinations. it would not be truly dynamic, but it would be a step from what we have right now.

Hell you can even revisit the zombies and give them more different ways of coming apart. like one with the legs sliced off at the knees or with the arms gone.

So that when you launch a rocket at some dumb combine overwatch dude, instead of just flying away from the explosion, he might fly away from the explosion minus a few limbs with his head caved in.

the only problem with this would be that as far as I know, you wouldn't be able to affect corpses, only live creatures.

(edit) Actually, shit, why didn't i think of this sooner? Vampire bloodlines has gibbing, if you can take a look at that, it would help out in the effort to bring some sort of gore to hl2
