Default graphics on startup?

Any reason why my graphic settings keep going back to medium for everything when I start HL2? I have a Geforce 4 ti4200 128meg... I have to force -dxlevel 81 to start up... but everytime i make changes to 'reflect all', high settings on textures models etc, and i hit apply, it sets it back to direct x 7... and doesnt keep my settings when i come back with direct x 8.1
its kind of annoying...

Well I don't actually know but maybe the game configures the settings according to your hardware and you are expecting too much of your gfx card.

maybe, but still i should be able to force it to load high settings, even if it would be unplayable / less fps.
