Darwiniahttp://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=1500&; Everyone loves it. The only problem is that it has no multiplayer function. But now, Introversion Software brings us a new title specifically built for the online world: DEFCON. Just released through Steam is a game in which you "play a General hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission is to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst saving your own."
Points are awarded or lost depending on both the efficacy and thoroughness of your nuclear vendetta and the number of your own civilian deaths. In order to win you must wipe out the enemy population and simultaneously disable the enemy's ability to retaliate against you. This is an extremely difficult task since launching an attack on the enemy exposes the positions of your own Ground Silos, Subs and Bombers the moment they launch nuclear weapons, making you extremely vulnerable and exposed to a crushing counter-attack.

I don't really understand how a game like that can be fun....
also -smash- you forgot the thread title.

Thought I forgot something. Thanks. :)

Btw, I'm not in to these games either. :p

You're both loons

At least try it! :D

Even if you don't like the gameplay you can appreciate the atmosphere.

I have tried it. :D

It's not the game, it's me. I like my run-n-gun games.

Yeah, the sounds and stuff is great. I'm just not a fan of RTSes of the sort.

It's definitely a strategist's game... or for those who are relatively patient gamers.

I kinda've like it, I wish we got a bit of a better visual representation of the nukes exploding though.

Yeah I am the same, it looks cool to me, just not my type of games.

Positively surprised

I've play a few games now and I really like it - it's simple, difficult, fun, frustrating, well worth it's price and great for wasting a little time with friends (and enemies!) :)

Hoping to convince more of my friends to buy this - I have yet to try a game with more than 3 players..

In short: give it a try

So much ignorance... Have any of you played the board game Risk? I recon this game is kind of like that and Risk is a lot of fun even when all it is is moving figures around a map of the world. Its about defeating your apponent and getting the satisfaction of knowing you just crushed an entire continent. .

as overrated as darwinia

Sure, it's been overrated by some; (p)reviewers as well as ordinary people in forums..
But that doesn't make it a bad game?! As for me, I don't join the hype of games anymore (This will be my 10th post here, since i joined before HL2 was released - I'm getting old!!), and I like the game anyhow. I guess my point is that the hype is irrelevant - rate the game by trying it, or rate the hype/publicity by looking at the forums/press releases..

as overrated as darwinia

...well, everyone has the right to their opinion, I guess.

as for myself, I really liked it, it was as good as Uplink, wich was my favorite from Introversion until now :p

Looking forward to finding out what Subversion is now. Can they really keep the good game count running past the hat-trick?

I really liked it. I wish I could play it with someone else though. Am I the only one having massive problems with the server browser and joining games in general?

Definetly a thinking mans game, and definetly fun.

Oh god crushing south america under a blanket of nukes will never get old.

I love this game.

It's all like "HAHAH MOSCOW YOU PIECE OF SHIT TAKE THAT!"

And then it flashes up: 14m dead.

And you think "Shit. I did that..." and go all cold.

Or at least I do. D:

My only two gripes with this game are:

a) I can't figure out how to "cancel" the formation of a naval fleet, if I choose the wrong ship, that ship is stuck there in the "build queue" until I set the fleet into the ocean.

b) You should be able to fire missiles "over" the North Pole, instead of having everything go parallel to the equator.

Great game though, I'm thinking of getting me a credit card just for this.

first: you just click on them in the que of ships that go into the fleet lawl

and yeah, you should be able to fire over the poles, it would even out the game more

Diiiiis game is daaaaaaymn awesome.

EDIT: Daaaaaaymn, Hazar, the black looks schweeet.

I love it :]
Really feels like you are playing W.O.P.R. from 'WarGames' :D

The style rocks.

Aye, I felt the same way after going "Hurrah, I won with only 15m losses!"

My thoughts exactly.

One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is statistics

Suits this game perfectly *nukes London*

There are some flaws if you play 1vs1. For example if you get Europe vs Asia Europe has a very limited area for fleet positions, while the asian player can put fleets quite close to the south easter parts of europe to launch nukes from subs or bombers.

We really should put Bush, Sadam, Blair and the rest with Defcon and let them have their Thermo-Nuclear War and see what happens. Noone wins. I mean might give them a thinker if they keep "winning" the war with some 15-30 million dead people on their continent.

i played a game with 6 people just off the demo and it was pretty fun, i allied with europe since i blew my nuke load incredibly fast on china and ended up getting 2nd with him backing me up. He got first because he used more strategy and stuff. But it was fun sneaking up on people and watching them go crazy as the explosions light up their countries.

It's a really cool game, but yeah, it feels a bit weird to obtain points by murdering civilians on the millions scale.

Nuclear war is baaayyyyyyaaaad. D:

a good strategy is too blow your whole load at the beginning with sneak attacks and what not but only target their civilians and not the military, it will cause devestation then have your silos return to air defense and have a powerful ally to deliver finishing blows and protect your ass while you go off an sneak subs into other enemy territories. Works for me anyway. In this game, killing civilians is prioritized over killing their military power. I wish their was a style where you objective was to destroy the entire population of the enemy countries. Ive bombed cities repeatedly but it seems population in a city won't die anymore than 0.1 million. I guess there is 100 thousand people in every city that our resistant to nuclear explosions or somehow got somewhere safe, but seriously with that many nukes I doubt anyone would live. This game is apocalyptic, I love it.

Whoah. The gameplay even sounds cooler than it looks! I might get this. :D

there are other scoring methods afaik. Like you get points for the % of your population that survived and such

Not as spectacular as Darwinia but nice, wish they added the manual to steam version as well tough.

The manual is great. Includes instructions to create your own personal bomb shelter and what clothes to wear and food to eat and stuff. I may build a nuclear bunker tonight out of pillows and then bomb the shit out of China.

I've been playing the demo a bit... I played it once, thought "meh that was ok"... then played it once again the next day. And once again the next day. Etcetera. I'm hooked! Can't wait till internets is set up in my flat so I can go online and kick commie ass :)

Sounds like a plan! ^_^

They are living in government vaults.

I really do like this game, but I don't like buying things from the internets. :(

I love DEFCON...

It has this cold-war James-Bond villan like mood arround it.
With it's simple graphics and sound design
It's very easy and simple to learn, yet very addictive and every game something new happens and unfolds differently. Kudos to Introversion. I also love how you can buy it on steam. I played the demo...Got fed up with playing with 2 players. Go to steam, purchase and 5min later I'm playing a full-blown 6-player war.
Loooovely....I recommend this game to everyone with some brains in his head.
It's not to hectic and also not to slow paced...And the different speed settings create different kinds of gameplay.

Some network problems but I'll guess they'll be fixed in time...

Buy it, buy it now...or install the demo
You have no idea how good it feels to nuke half of the world

Muhahahahahahaaaaaaa

I pre-ordered it before release, and i must say it is truly a great game

There are a few issues that need sorting though
