Defective Product Key?

I just went out today and purchased HL2 Episode 1 (a little late I know but money doesn't grow on trees these days) When I went to install it I had to put in the product key which I found on the provided paper slip inside the case. I put it in several times double checking and making sure that I wasn't typing a character wrong and that maybe what I thought was a 1 was an L blah blah blah but it wouldn't work! Is it possible that the product key is defective? Help me out. I could go just return it and exchange it for a different game but I might aswell ask before I do. I want to have the game up and ready for a party tomorrow afternoon.

E-mail VALVe, with a picture of your box and a clear picture of your product key. Ask them what it is, and if it's defective at all. They should be able to help.

Nevermind, I got it fixed. I went out and got a replacement, which still didn't work. Then I thought "HEY! Why don't I restart Steam which has been running for the past 3 days cus I remember hearing that games won't install if Steam isn't up to date! " DUH!!! It worked and I further proved that I am an idiot

So I guess that's a good way to get 2 accounts, return the game to get a replacement

Dude, i don't even have HL2... on my PC, let alone a desktop to handle it!!!
