Just did a defrag starting at 58.5GB of free space left. took all day, and when it finished I'm now left with a whopping 51.9GB of free space. can anyone explain this?? You're supposed to free up space when doing this right?? Well everytime I defrag same shit happens. can anyone explain this?? I've never had trouble like this before but its boggling

defrag doesn't free up space, it rearranges the data in a more efficient layout...but only temporarily, within a few days it'll all be fragmented again. Use CCleaner to free up space and Defraggler to defrag.

I have no excuse for why it did that though, restart and see if any of the space came back. Why not?

Happened to me too, they were restore points (known to happen in Vista during a defrag) and I got my space back after I deleted and rebooted. Try it. But dont expect any more free space than you already had.
I no longer use the Vista defragger though:P I Changed to a really good automatic defragger that has none of the problems that normally occur with defrag. Whats more it prevents a lot of fragmn.

ok guys, have 77.2GB of space now and I didn't restart or anything. should be good. kinda scared me there but i notice now my drive goes up and down in the GBs frequently. very inconsistent, but at least its not like 50GB left, I need the space for games!
