Hey guys, I was saving up for one of those mini iPods, but I was able to buy a 30GB Dell DJ Player for only $170 instead. Do you all think this was a good deal? Also, which is better in general, the iPod or the Dell DJ?

Ipod mini or nano?

Apple > Dell anyday.

Creative Zen Touch

24 hour battery life > all

This is obviously the argument of whatever mp3 you shlled out the money for is the win.
I have an ipod nano im loving it only set back is sometimes the album art wont display right. Ive never used a dell mp3 player so I cant give you an unbiased opinion, however you could try here for a better result: www.cnet.com

Well, the thing is that even an iPod mini with only about 5gb of space cost around $200 right? So this Dell i bought has 30gb of storage space (6 times bigger) only cost me $170. I might sell it thought (I mean, i doubt i'll use all 30gb anyway :P) and buy a Zen Micro Photo or something. Does anyone know if i can have voice recordings or radio recordings with the Dell Dj 30gb?

I'm gonna say one of those Archos Multimedia players.

with their ability to play movies and record from the TV.

I've not much experience with Dell DJ and the iPods.

If you can get a 30gb player that's cheaper than the iPod then get the cheaper one.

Just get a light laptop and carry it around with you in a backpack with headphones plugged in.

"Light laptop" is like "Modern History" -- an oxymoron.

Nothing but Creative.

Creative has superb sound quality and easily makes the best product for the dollar. It definetly outshines Apple especially since Apple has to copy the name 'Nano' from Creative and put it towards a product which is nearly 100% defective with its cracking screen at the touch of a feather.

The Creative Zen Micro and Touch easily own any over priced iPod.

is your opinion based on personal opinion? have you compared both the creative and Ipod?

I reckon if you want to keep it simple, use the Ipod. You'll be able to play mp3s and apple's own brand of music file.

If you want more, such as watching movies on a small screen, you might be interested in archos or possibly creative (dunno if creative do movies).

I personally don't like the Ipod, but don't let my personal taste sway your opinion. Also I haven't kept up to date with media players recently, but I'm hoping to purchase a new one soon.

nah wont be watching movies on a handheld ..I dont have that much free time ..strictly music and pod casts of news programs and politics (of course :) )

I personally trust and like apple as I've been an apple user for 10 years or so. Best service I've ever had for any product

Actually, this is all based on personal opinion. Three of my friends own the Creative Zen Touch, and I personally own the Creative Zen Micro. While nearly every other person who does is not computer/tech saavy has an iPod because its a trendwhore's dream.

I do notice it that the Creatives have a better sound than the iPods.. While the organization on the iPod is a tad bit better. I thought the wheel on the iPod and the touch bar on the Zen's were awesome features. Both were very easy to use. They both are very organized. The only downfall with Creative is you don't get a program such as iTunes which has great organizing. Although it is quite a resource hog, I still use it for my main music player on my computer. I found iPod is just very pricey. Their products are good, but definetly not good enough to pay more than what they are worth. Can you tell me why the 20 GB iPod is $300 when you can possibly get any other 20 GB MP3 player for nearly $100 less?

As you can tell, I am not biased towards Creative or any other MP3 player. I just think that you can easily get better products than the iPod for cheaper. I purchased my Creative Zen Micro for $170 which is the 5GB model while my other friends purchased their iPod Minis that hold 4GB or 6GB for $200 or $250.. Its not good enough to slap that kind of pricetag on it.

The Creatives also allow you to listen to FM Radio which in essence is better since for the iPod you have to purchase something else to get FM. I also noticed that every specific item sold just for the iPod is even more than what they are worth. The products include the stereoes where you place your iPod in, the iTrip, etc.. I noticed the price for each goes up a significant value compared to other MP3 player items. I could purchase an FM Transmitter that is just as good as the iTrip for $15 which is sold for +$30..

The market makes a killing thanks to iPod. All these people who are trendy have to have an iPod which then they have to buy specific items just for it..

I am a bit different from Shamrock as I have had an iPod before, 2nd generation, I believe. It is a quite bit different that the Micro (considering that the iPod is much, much bigger in actual size and memory size). I like the circle touch-pad although I do find the Creative Zen's vertical touch-pad much more easier to use.

I also like the look and feel of the Micro much, much better -- the Zen Micro is just so sexy. Lights ungulfing the player from the outside, blue, and the screen glaring at your face. Makes you melt in a gadget sort-of way. The iPod for me was blocky and big which is one of the main reasons I went to the Micro instead of the Touch.

I can't tell between the quality on the two -- both are subperb. The menus, to me, are alike in the sense they are organized.

Overall, the Micro is so much better in so many ways. Some may say "well, if the sound quality is the same, what does all the other stuff matter?" Well, the "other stuff" does matter because if you were just buying a music player, you'd buy something else (flash-based). And $180 (at Walmart here) for such a QUALITY music player? How much better can you get?

One little side note about a pet peeve -- at school, I'll be selecting a song and some twat will come up to me and ask "Is that an iPod?" Uhg, I wanna slap 'em.

I actually always recommend going for a brand such as Dell or Creative over the standard IPod (mini and nano are a different story) since you can get something at least as good for much less, just like you did.
The only thing you miss out on are the nice aesthetics and cool controls.

Oh, and the Nano "cracking" problem seems to only effect a tiny, tiny portion of the Nano's sold and Apple has acknowlegded the problem.

very helpful ...but I'd like to add that people tend to be brand loyal ..it's like american cars versus import cars ..people are willing to shell out more for import cars despite the fact that american and import cars are designed to do the same thing: get from point A to B. People could rightfully argue the merits of both cars because each offers something to other doesnt or is inferior. You want handling get a japanese car, want a lot of power get an american car etc

oh and the itrip is a FM transceiver not receiver ...you use it to play your ipod on your car stereo

oh and couldnt you use itunes with your Creative Zen? and I just looked up prices and they're virtually the same as the ipod ..if not a few dollars less

That is what I meant by a 'transmitter.' Meaning it emits the music to radio.

The iTunes is an Apple product. Therefore it soley supports the iPod and just the iPod. It would be nice if you could get it to work, but it is not that big of a deal. I like the software that they give with you.

I did fail to mention the look, didn't I? :( I, too, love the look of the Creative Zen Micro. The light gives it such an awesome look. Plus with the 10 colours you get to choose from, it gives you a larger variety than most companys, especially iPod. I, personally, have the Citrus Orange colour. It looks amazing in my opinion. It just stands out better than anything you can imagine.

Though like Qonfused touched upon, the next person that asks me, "Is that ze OMG iPod?" I will punch them profusely or till they go unconscious.

The Apple store in a nearby store was selling AC adapters at 6 for $45, I went next door and found one for $2. I hate how you have to buy a seperate adapter JUST to get the stupid AC adapter (which they charge you $45 for) to work with a 3-pin socket. If apple had it their way I'd be paying them $90 just to charge my iPod mini.
