Deus Ex - HDTP Release #1

hmm maybe deus ex will be worth another playthrough, thanks

Deus Ex is ALWAYS worth another playthrough. :D
I came across another mod whilst looking at this one...Deus Ex: Reborn. Apparently it's a port of Deus Ex to the UT2004 engine. There's an early alpha release (lost the link...moddb somewhere) but it's only 49mb in size. I imagine it's nothing too special right now.

There's a source remake of Deus Ex called Deus Ex: Source on moddb I believe.

Ooh...I must look. No doubt it's in a barely functional state, as with most of these mods...

Ok I looked - it's in the pre-planning stages. :(

Why would someone even bother with such a silly mod? The idea of someone remaking a game as huge as Deus Ex with any kind of quality as a mod is just ****ing silly. Not to mention the gratuitous copyright infringment. Just a big circle jerk.

A decent Hi-Def mod for the original is the only way to go, this may be worth checking out.

Wow going to try this out one day. Once i finish some of the games i have piled up.

That's different. First of all the engine, to say the least, is perfect for it. Secondly, although it's a hugely ambitious project, it is much more possible than remaking Deus Ex. Movement speed, core gameplay, AI, effects, and even some assets are already in place. Basically they're re-mapping, re-texturing, and re-modeling ... Deus Ex is a whole other ballpark. There are so many complexities and things to think about, so many angles to work, it would be impossible. And to do all this while maintaining a high level of visual quality - the only reason it would be worth doing ... it's just stupid to even think about such a thing.

And once again, I bring up the enormous copyright issue.

Point.

Ion Storm is dead, but where does that leave the copyright? But I still think the way you phrased it left Black Mesa as a valid thing to bring up. After all, how could you expect anybody to remake a game as big as Half-Life with any kind of quality?

(Still waiting on the Deus Ex: Source mod, if for no better reason than physics and non-geometric explosions.)

The UT2004 mod uses material off the Deus Ex CD, which you have to copy across. I assume that's how they get around it.
Like I said, there is already an early alpha release.

If I'm not mistaken, even abandonware still hold copyrights so it's still a major issue.

With Black Mesa, it's ambitious for a mod team but nowhere near the scope as re-creating Deus Ex on a completely foreign engine in UT2k4. HL1 and HL2 share many things similar, and like smw mentioned, many of these 'core' elements are already in place.

But this is beside's the point, the issue is it is foolish for any mod team to re-create an entire revolutionary game on completely foreign format with any hopes of quality (the only reason for such a mod to exist in the first place). Bottom line is, this is kind of like asking a group of 6th graders to build NASA a rocket to Mars. While the MesaSource project is more like asking a group of engineer students to build a new car.

Deus Ex was on the Unreal Engine I believe so the difference between it and the UT2004 engine would be marginal.

Marginal meaning massive? The original UT engine was about the same as the HL1 engine.

The UT engine is far more advanced than the HL engine (which is Quake with a few modifications). Also, the UT2004 engine is just an upgraded version of the UT engine. As has already been pointed out, there is a working version of the port.

Just tried this and to be honest think the original Gunther is much better than this modded version.

Ragdolls, better lighting, physics?

I love this mod, I'm a total fanboy for it, it has some bugs in this release, mainly with the Gunther animation, doesn't mean it doesn't make this fun though.

I love the improved version. Unfortunately, the game slows to a chug when there's lots of objects on screen. The engine was just not designed for this number of polygons.

So you got it working then? :D
