Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is the upcoming extended version of the original Devil May Cry 3 featuring the opportunity to play as Vergil, Dante's nemesis and brother. Vergil's armed with his brand-new "Dark Slayer" fighting style, and apart from him, you'll also get to battle against one new boss, experience adjusted difficulty levels, use an alternate continue system, and play in a survival-arena mode called Bloody Palace. Like other extended editions of late, DMC3: Special Edition will retail at a lower price point than the original game (it's effectively the Greatest Hits version), and is currently set to ship at the end of January for $19.95. We got the opportunity to sit down with a near-final preview copy of the game and experience what the new character, moves, and modes had to offer, and came away with renewed excitement for one of last year's best action adventure games.

[...]

The original but sometimes-maligned continue system, based on using yellow orbs, is still in the game, which means that for as many yellow orbs as are in your inventory, you'll be able to restart the game from the last checkpoint (as opposed to the beginning of the chapter). But there's also a new continue system called "gold orb." You'll be able to purchase gold orbs instead of yellow orbs (albeit they cost more). As long as you have gold orbs in your inventory, you'll be able to pick up the game right where you die, and when you run out of gold orbs, you'll always be able to restart from the last checkpoint. This makes the game significantly easier for newcomers to the series, who'll effectively gain multiple lives against the game's tough bosses, yet the option of a rigid difficulty is still there for purists.

Read the full Hands-On here.

I'm not really sure if a US/European version is in the work, and I'm not getting my hopes up on it either.
But if it would, in the future, I'm sure I would pick it up as I haven't, yet, even played Devil May Cry 3 which is a quite shame. :(

This sure looks very nice, and be sure to download and check out this, very neat, video featuring the intro for Vergil.

Gamespot got some really crappy screens. Go and buy a decent capture card, ffs.

Get DMC3 :P

This looks pretty nice, hope it comes out over here.

Well, I might do that if the Special Edition doesn't arrive here in Europe. I'm a big fan of the first DMC, only God knows how many times I've played through it. :)
I heard though that the game is quite hard?

Not really, until you reach Dante Must Die mode with those damn archer things :( You can jump around doing any missions on any difficulty you like at any time provided you've unlocked them, which makes it a lot easier to get the secret missions done, or just get more orbs to buy stuff :P

I didnt find dmc3 so good as the first one,and I even didnt finished it,when this especial edition comes I will play it

I found DMC3 to be pleasingly hard while I got back into my DMC groove. Once I got into it I didn't die nearly as much. Lots of people found normal to be way to hard and resorted to easy. I'm going through the game again on Hard again pretty soon here.

Once I got going, I found normal really quite easy, hard is only really hard when fighting a certain couple of bosses. Dante Must Die I really struggle with the archers :/

I was told to go Trickmaster for the dodges and whatnot, but I went gunslinger first which didn't help as much as I had hoped later but it was still damn fun to use :)

After gunslinger I went swordmaster and it started to get a lot easier. After I maxed that out I started using trickster...THEN it got pretty damn easy because of the simple dodges made it very easy to counterattack.

One of those last levels was a bitch though facing like 5 bosses back to back.

You only had to fight 3 you know :P and if you get them all you get a blue orb piece.

man dmc3 fookin owns, i picked it up last year during the summer(i think) and loved it, it was so hard for me though, i hadnt played a ps2 game since mgs3 so even using the contoller proved difficult :P

i got a few chapters in and 'unlocked' the easy option so chose it, still found it harder than most games but the gameplay is insane, so fast, dantes moves are so awesome, a really great capcom game, lotsa unlockables/replay value too, different styles etc, gona start playing it again soon...

on topic, looks great, vergil has some extravagant moves alright, i woulda liked to have the ability to play as lady too, she had some great moves

Normal mode on DMC3 was pretty easy, except the Bosses which had you hammering away at them for like an hour with their masses amount of health.

I would totally buy this if it came out in the US. DMC3 was pretty damn hard for me... I got to a certain point and I couldnt get past it alive... plus it had to go back to blockbuster. I never did beat it, but I loved it, so I would but this version likity split.

Yeah, I have that problem (except that I own it). I'm stuck at level 19 (out of 21) and the thought of re-defeating the bosses terrifies me.

Anyone who has played the first game in the series, would you classify DMC3 to be better? Just curious. :)

IGN review - http://ps2.ign.com/articles/683/683034p1.html

9.0 - Presentation
A surprisingly well-told story gets a few extra scenes and is joined by speedy load-times and an excellent interface. Oh, and the cutscene direction rocks!

8.5 - Graphics
Dante aged pretty well in the last year and his game still stands out as a visual thunderclap. Expect fast framerates, great textures and lighting effects, and inspiring artistic design throughout.

9.0 - Sound
Superb digital mixing, an awesome soundtrack, and one of the better vocal casts that Capcom has ever used come together quite effectively.

9.0 - Gameplay
A super-customizable combat system gets even deeper with an added character, readjusted difficulty settings, and a few other tweaks. It's still fun, fun stuff.

9.5 - Lasting Appeal
The cool Bloody Palace arena mode, the ability to play as two completely different characters, and a host of secret missions should ensure extensive playtime.

OVERALL : 9.0 - Outstanding

After viewing a few videos, I say without hesitation that

Ninja Gaiden > > > > DMC.

Nein fraulein. I have played all the DMC's and I can safely say DMC3 is much harder than Ninja Gaiden and Dante is way cooler.

Comparing DMC1 & 3 is a toughy. DMC3 has styles which is really cool, not to mention more of everything, but I do have to say DMC1 is just a great game overall as well. I'm torn between the two. I like the Dante of DMC1 better, but I like the weapons of DMC3 better. I have fond memories of the first (one of the first hard games I've played and really tried to get good at) and have good memories of the 3rd (harder than the 1st but it didn't feel as cool).

I'd say start with DMC1. It's a greatest hits and you can pick it up cheap. Then try out DMC3 and see how much you like it. DMC2 can be completely skipped since it's way too easy and just lame. You can shoot everything (including bosses) to death through the ENTIRE game...

The Good: Features a compelling and fairly well developed new player character, Vergil; highly responsive, fluid, well-designed combat system makes for great action; much more reasonable difficulty level than the original version; various bonus extras not found in the original version, like a survival mode; budget price.

The Bad: The bonus extras aren't fully fleshed out and feel like they were thrown in; since combat isn't as gruelingly difficult, it's also somewhat less rewarding.

Score : 8.2 - GREAT

sounds good but not sure if i want to buy the game all over again for these extras even if it is budget, being broke ftl!

Pretty hypocritcal. He complains at first that its too hard, no its easier and its not as rewarding. Make up your damn mind.

DMC3 starts out hard as hell, every battle will kick your ass.

Then all of a sudden, you simply play better. Ordinary mobs fall quick. You dodge the boss's attacks. And you wonder what the fuss was about. It's really quite cool.
