I haven't played this game in ages. Would my characters still even be there?

Your accnt and char's should still be there, but they will be unaccessible.

I kind of wish they'd just delete them, save me the painful moment of looking @ my past characters

Exactly why I do not play. D2 is all about rushing, getting to lvl 99, etc.. And repeat. No point..no.....reason to play... While at least CS holds some skill needed.

Getting rushed and levelling to level 99 is where there is no skill.

Trading [omg, the trading channel is a skill on it's own] and pk'ing is where the skill is at.
