"Blizzards World Wide Invitational will be held from June 28 - 29 in France, Paris this year.

Here's the clues that leads up to the announcement.

-------------
Diablo3.com was claimed by Blizzard yesterday. The previous owner used it as a fansite to the Diablo series.
Diablo3.com now links to their new address - Diablofans.com.

WWI 2008 in France, Paris is on the same date as diablo 2 and its expansion release dates.

Diablo3 and Blizzplanet both had countdowns yesterday to announced the acquisition.

Both websites now have a countdown till blizzcon.

Blizzplanet is known to have a very good connection with Blizzard

Blizzplanet says the World will be shaken on a diablo banner with a countdown til Blizzcon.

From diablofans.com:

This is what Blizzard rep told Next-Gen.Biz: "Please note that we regularly secure ownership of domain names to safeguard our intellectual properties, as was the case with this. Regarding any plans for a new Diablo game, as much as we?d like to eventually revisit that universe, .......... we don?t have any plans to announce at this time." - May 1, 2008

This is what Blizzard Rep said to DailyTech: Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, ........... but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present. -- that was said on april 20, 2007

And surprise-surpise ... a month later on May 18, 2007 Blizzard announced Starcraft 2 at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals.

copypasted, seems pretty interesting! hope it's true, i <3 diablo series

I wonder if they'll go with the cartoony graphics, as seen in WoW and Starcraft 2.

Should be interesting to see where this goes. I love the diablo series. I'd prolly be disappointed if it was an mmo tho, unless they managed to do it in a way that doesn't require a monthly fee.

Please i hope they dont make it into a cartoon-mmo....and DONT MAKE IT OVER-SHOULDER...KEEP THE SAME VIEWPOINT AS IN DIABLO2 OR I WILL BLOW UP BLIZZARDS OFFICE!

Well the WAR/STAR craft games have always been rather cartoony in style, but both Diablo I and II have been the more mature, gritty, grim game that they have produced

"The team behind Diablo I and II..."

How is that possible? I was under the impression only a handful of the original developers remained at Blizzard after Blizzard North dissolved.

If they do announce Diablo 3, cool, but it wont be anything like Diablo or Diablo II.

Some of the members behind the original Diablo series are working on Mythos atm.

But also, they could be just buying to preserve their property rights. Don't want some random asscock to steal it and make it a porn site.

oh f*ck yes.

Indeed - I think Blizzard really knows how to make a classic. They haven't released a single game that I haven't at least seen the genius in. I have no doubt they'll surpass expectations with Diablo 3.

And a prequel would be kickass.

The only problem with a prequel is that Diablo II ended with a cliffhanger, and it'd be a real kick to the collective nuts of their fans to not give them some sort of resolution.

Oh no doubt- I can't wait to see what happens to the world after the Worldstone is destroyed.

I never cared about any elements of the story in the Diablo series.

Why? I loved the games, I just didn't care about the story.

These are MUSTS in Diablo3 for me:

-Same Viewpoint as in D2
-No Cartoon Artsyle
-No MMO
-No Pay per Play
-Same drop system (no rolling shit like in WoW, the exitment in D2 where everyone rushes to get the item is what made this game godlike and realistic)
-Same pace, i dont want any slow paced action (selecting the enemy then hit the numbers on the keyboards every 4 seconds to attack...**** that shit)
-Same grim and godlike sound effects
-Same dark and evil atmosphere
-Runewords
-Same font style (sry but its a must)
-Improved channel/game browsing system with search engine
-If something is 3D and looks cartoony/shit...make it 2D, diablo2 is all 2D and looks great, so i see no problem in bringing some 2D back.

Last but not least:

DECKARD CAIN

It's my favorite storyline of any game I've ever played. The lore is so rich if you care to get into it, and the game just fancifully plays on the surface of it. I've read the three first Diablo books and a bit of the new ones. They're fantastic.

Last but not least:

DECKARD CAIN

Stay a'while and listen!

I just want slightly less emphasis on the point-and-clicking on waves upon waves of enemies and the constant running of bosses over and over and over and over [...] just to get items or to level up. Emphasis on item-farming and boss-rushing is what killed the game for me. Sure, there's nothing wrong with killing enemies for items, but after you play online for more than a couple of months, it becomes a game entirely made up of playing the same damn two levels endlessly, hoping for random chance to look nicely upon you. It's boring.

Oh, but I swear that Diablo II has some of the most awesome music in a game ever. They need to get the same guy to do the music in the (potential) sequel.

Complete opposite feelings for me, i loved the endless point-and-click and constantly killing bosses over and over and over again. Once you get an enigma you can pull of an andy run within 20 seconds. I remember when my friend came over for a little lan party, we use to be up all night just MFing like crazy, killing the bosses over and over again, then trading the items for runes, then the runes for keys, and then doing the Uber-Bosses and getting torches and become rich and powerfull and then die in lack of sleep/food/water...but it was worth it.

I agree with both of you in some ways. Somewhere between the amazing soundtrack and the mindless fun, I fell completely in love with D2. MFing was tedious, but I remember plenty of sleepless nights just playing and leveling with friends.

Diablo 3=Hellgate: London

I wouldn't count on it since most of the original developers left Blizzard.

I agree with ya on everything. I just wanna add a couple things!

+ able to choose gender for your class
+ ability to redo your skills/attributes at any time (copy Guild Wars for all I care, I'm sick of "skill/stat build" bullshit... it's my guy, let me do what the **** I feel like with him, and if that's different than yesterday, so ****ing what!

And when I ask that Fallout 3 stay true to it's predecessors, a circlejerk forms that jumps at me and calls me a fanatic.

Bunch of f***in' hypocrites you all are.

Probably not gonna happen. Catering to the hardcore is what kept the Diablo online communities alive years after release, and if there's one thing Blizzard is known for, it's giving the fans what they want (just not necessarily when they want :p).

Well, for one, it's being made by the same company. Also, this is the first time it's been brought up, and mostly without the general doomsaying and bitterness.

Edit - Whoops, double post unintentional.

I think we're forgetting that the Diablo 3 soundtrack has been completed.

I'd love to see the nerd rage here if Diablo 3 was sold out to another company and changed into an FPH like Dark Messiah.

If they can cut down a bit on the hack-and-slash in favour of slightly more strategic gameplay, too, then I'll be quite happy.
Agreed, it's one thing that D1 beats D2 in. Blocking doors, letting warriors in a room first, where to cast firewall, etc are things I miss in D2 where everything is more open and much more rush, rush, rush.

I was just thinking that as I read through this thread.

Oh well, it'll be interesting I'm sure, was never a huge fan of Diablo myself though.

Diablo II's gameplay, unfortunately, consists almost entirely of right-clicking. Whether you're a Barbarian, Sorceress, Amazon, etc., all you have to do is tap or hold down the right mouse button, and you're good to go. The only character classes that have some strategy, like a summon Druid or Necromancer, are so weak that they're not worth playing. Even if a Sorceress had to use some sort of curse-like spells in order to soften up enemies to do real damage (weakness to frost, fire, etc.) it would add a lot to the game.

To be fair, I had stopped playing by the time the latest patches came out, so maybe they fixed some of that. It's a pretty huge update from what I remember.

The game is fairly complex when you're trying to kill efficiently in Hell. Some people play by strict rules to make the game more fun like no merchant shopping or repairing.

Yeah, I know. I'm guilty of the same. In fact, I don't really even know what the worldstone is.

:(

Big red evil stone, destroyed by big white glowy winged guy with big white glowy sword at the end of D2.

Since playing D2 many years ago, I came up with this simple plot/story that I thought would be good for a sequel. Archangel Tyrael is overwhelmed by the eviil energy relesed by destroying the worldstone, with his new evil-ness and strength, he sets out to conquer heaven (and releasing the prime evils, yet again, to aid him this time), and you have to stop him.

The stone itself wasn't evil. It was corrupted by Baal, so Tyrael had no choice but to destroy it lest the World succumb to Hell's Legions. There is no telling what will happen now the worldstone is destroyed, though. Me thinks epic heaven vs. Hell wars!

It has to be first person! 3rd person anything is soooo last decade. In this day and age first person is the only acceptable vantage point. [/sarcasm]
