So i installed Diablo II: Lod on my dad's laptop, and as I got my first hireling, the Rogue from Act I, I wondered, "what's your favorite hireling in Diablo II?" (Lord of Destruction, because it's Diablo II original sucks).

and a poll

Offense paladin Act 2 Normal or Hell (either one is fine as long as they're apropriate level). Works great with might aura if I use Skelemancer. :)

Only hireling I ever used was the free one you get in Act I. I'd use her for a while all like "she's kinda useful"... then we'd get to Act 2, she'd die, and I wouldn't care.

They get far too expensive to resurrect later on... like 25-30k per death. That's gamblin' money!

Act III Ice guys. Their attacks freeze whole groups which means those annoying ass fetish things.

I really suck at Diablo 2, so I never used all available tools, like hirelings. The one I used most was the free rogue, so...

Act 2 Nightmare hirelings. They are anything but useless. They get different auras if you hire them in nightmare instead of normal or hell and their auras are great. I personally go for either Holy Freeze to slow them or Defiance for extra defense. On top of the aura they do good damage and if you equip them with lifestealing items they won't die very often unless maybe against a boss.

List of Auras:
Combat (Normal): Prayer
Combat (Nightmare): Thorns
Combat (Hell): Prayer
Defense (Normal): Defiance
Defense (Nightmare): Holy Freeze
Defense (Hell): Defiance
Offense (Normal): Blessed Aim
Offense (Nightmare): Might
Offense (Hell): Blessed Aim

The free rouge in act one.

I got bored with D2 before the end of act one, so the rest are a mystery to me.

I'm told the Act 2 paladins are the best, for reasons Kisze has mentioned.

Wha.. How... well, I... What?

Act 1, starting a new character is the best part! It's when you get a super god character that it gets boring. Especially if you play the game legit, thats my favorite part, no help (besides other new chars), just questin with some lvl 1's with you lvling and growing.. It's awesome!

BTW Anyone who still plays my username is Dog-Dash, the only HL2.netter I played with is pitz!

wow, I was really expecting the results to be the rogues. I think they're the best.

ActI > Act III > Act V > Act II

I really don't like the desert mercs. they seem to die to much and aren't that useful.

I get too attached to the helper I buy in Act I anyways. I usually keep the same guy/girl throughout the game.

Act 3 hirelings kick ass with the barbs following close behind.

But, I almost exclusively played the game online.

My bad, it was Nightmare, not Normal or Hell

Mine is the ice mage of act 3 and so is my dads. My mum likes the ice rogue from act 1. I don't like the pike man. He dies to quick.

Act 2 holy freeze with an infinity polearm. Works great for a lot of classes.

You play D2 with your folks? That's ****in' awesome.

this^^^

Back when my older sister used to play games, she and I both liked the Cold arrow Rogue, and for some reason, the one named Gwinni was sort of a tradition. Now when I play I always shuffle the names until I get the Lvl 5 cold arrow Gwinni. I even named the kitten I had Gwinni.

Got some kind of lightning sword for my barbarian early on, pretty much everything died in 3 hits or less and so I found it dull.

3 hits? You must've sucked at it then lol.

Nightmare Act II Defence Merc

Slap on an Infinity polearm and BAM. Specially if you're a lightning sorceress. :p

I didn't use henchmen because they became too expensive to res all the time and they died too easily. In normal mode I liked the Act 3 mercs for the aoe cold spells.

Well remember, the hirelings in Diablo II were shit, they had no stats, couldn't be maintained, and were wimpy.

But the changes in LoD i think were greatest for the hirelings. A health bar, stats, experiance, weapon and armor, and could stay with you throughout acts.

Get the NM Offensive Act II merc. Why? There is no level cap on his might aura, so having the lowest level possible on him and raising him up to 90+ means you get a ridiculous damage boost.

Want Holy Freeze on him? Give him the Doom runeword.

Want Thorns on him? Give him Bramble runeword.

Now you have a merc walking around with 3 auras.

I somehow feel attached to the rogue I get in the beginning... until Act III where I get someone useful :D

you're a monster! you develop a relationship with a character then ditch her when someone better comes along?!

good idea.
