A leaked internal script and tentative piece of concept art. It's what we've all been waiting for. Entirely new classes, interesting new play dynamics and the search for the betrayer,Cain? You really want to read more. Right now. Perhaps, even, stay a while, and listen.
The weary warrior dragged himself across the frozen land back to the camp.
“Is it done? What happened?” asked Cain.
“Tyrael destroyed it. Baal is gone, and the worldstone’s power is no more.”
Cain’s face suddenly distorted into a terrifying grin. “Excellent!” he said “With those three fools removed and the worldstone broken, nothing can stand in my way!”
Suddenly there was an explosion of fire that seemed to engulf Cain’s body, but did not consume him. Portals began to open all around the camp and hideous creatures streamed out of them. The rest of the camp came running over to where the warrior knelt exhausted next to the specter of the burning Cain.
“What’s happening!?” They shouted. But the warrior was too exhausted, too overcome with despair having realized that he had been used all along from the start. Cain was a demon. Not just any demon, one of the oldest and most powerful. All that had kept him in check was the combined efforts the Three Terrors and the worldstone’s power to keep hell from breaking into the world. No wonder Cain had always known what to do next, what every strange artifact found was, who to seek for help in the quest to defeat the Three. He had plotted and schemed all along. When Diablo broke free he had aided heroes in the quest to destroy him and his brothers so that he might stand unopposed to rule the world. With the worldstone gone, he was free to unleash hell itself into the mortal realm.
Cain began to cackle manically as the hordes slaughtered the lucky, and did worse to the rest. “And you,” he said “You will be duly rewarded for your long efforts to assist me.” The warrior screamed in terror as Cain’s hand came towards him, but he could no longer summon the strength to fight or flee. His curse upon Deckard Cain echoed across the mountains, but the only answer was the scream of hell unleashed.
Rumors have it this is the beginning of the plot for Diablo III: The Search for Deckard Cain. This time, Cain has become the villain and players take on the roles of not just humans, but other races that are threatened by the emergence of hell itself into the mortal world.
Further rumors suggest that the type of playable classes and races will be more varied, and have more of an effect on game-play than in previous titles. Blizzard seems to be borrowing heavily from their Warcraft series in order to stock the Diablo III cast with new heroes. For example, an Orc fighter, who with increased skills and abilities can summon other orcs and fight in a squad-like combat system. A female Taurin barbarian, similar to the ones in World of Warcraft but not without a resemblance to the population of the famous cow levels. A Succubus, from the first Diablo that has turned on her own kind to stop the utter madness sweeping both our world and hell, and can use her powers to charm enemies.
This doesn’t mean that normal human characters are out of the game. There will likely be quite a few classes with various interesting styles. Rumors include the Gem Master, which can absorb enemy spells into various gems, and create others that produce specific effects. And also the Pirate, who is rumored to have skills and abilities that improve the number, quality, and variety of items players will find, in an effort to satisfy those who are always hungry for an endless stream of rare magic items.
