A suicide bomber struck at the main entrance to Bagram air base in Afghanistan today, as Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting.

A Taliban spokesperson has claimed responsibility, saying the intended target was in fact Cheney. The bomber never got near Cheney.

Maj. William Mitchell said it did not appear the explosion was intended as a threat to the vice president. "He wasn't near the site of the explosion," Mitchell said. "He was safely within the base at the time of the explosion."

However, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, a purported Taliban spokesman, said Cheney was the target of the attack.

"We knew that Dick Cheney would be staying inside the base," Ahmadi told AP telephone from an undisclosed location. "The attacker was trying to reach Cheney."

Vice President Dick Cheney was hangin? with Mr. Karzai at the Bagram military base this morning when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the gate. Cheney was unhurt, because he always travels with dozens of layers of human shields, but the experience clearly shook him ? he hasn?t looked this pleased with himself since he shot that lawyer.

This failed assassination attempt will, of course, just fuel the rumors that Cheney?s immortal, either due to be being an android of some kind or from having sold his soul to Peter Fonda.

Yeah I just found this out too. It's ironic though because when he met that Pakistan leader, he said they were making "great strides on the war on terrorism." Also he said Pakistan should try harder (they already are). Just imagine if Cheney was killed. I think this is the closest a president or vice president has been to assisination in a long time. Still Cheney says that everything is going fine even though he was almost blown up. :hmph:
