I just didnt see why alot of peeps liked it... You go around killing zombie that throw endless amounts of their own flesh, that just so happen to look like headcrabs, and you have this spear thing that you retract peeps with...thats about it. I didnt like it... UT2k4 NOW THAT KICKS ASSS!!!

Agreed. Except I didn't care much for the UT2004 demo.

I'd say that I enjoyed it on the level that I'd enjoy anything where you provide rooms, badguys and weapons.

I thought it was sort of fun but I just deleted it. Wanna know why? It was too hard! I could only beat the first level on normal. Maybe my FPS skills aren't what they once were although I could probably beat it if there was ANY sort of saving system. I don't care whether they use quicksave or checkpoints...I just hate having to start the whole thing over when I die!

I think its cool they are trying to bring back the old school fps whatnot, but its not quite fast paced enough for that. for that style of play I would still even now prefer doom. or zDooM or something. I just played it and I don't reallly understand it. like whats the point? maybe I'm so lost in this storyline business that I forgot games don't necessarily have to have one. its pretty decent and I'll play it more later but whatever. just doesn't seem all that amazing to me. in all seriousness, a chaingun could SO fix that.

edit: well, ok, its definitely a full on old school arcade style shooter, and it does that decently, but still, we need a chaingun. I think I'll play through some more, getting the secrets and whatnot.

I myself haven't really cared for Shooter Galleries, I truly enjoy a storyline and plot development. But, this is certainly different. It's everything I could want out of a shooter. As much I love people, I'm quite a dark person. This game really tickled my fancy. I enjoyed all levels, but I must say; The Midievil was the best. A rotting Purgatory, full of mindless Zombies and Wizards. The music was great also, and the sound effects of crying men, women, and children was a nice touch. I truly enjoyed the blade-beam thing. Reminded me of HL2's Physgun, only funner. :)
The graphics were great, and the Sound Coding was pulled off very well. I can run Creative EAX with 1600x1280 Res, with all graphics on highest and do quite well for myself. Of course, it eventually bogs down, and I have to revert to Miles Fast 2d Audio. But, it lasts for quite a long time, especially when compared to CoD's Sound Coding with Creative EAX. Well, there is also Direct3D Hardware; A really nice option, that sounds just as good as EAX with less CPU usage. Of coure, like the other, it eventually gets too much for me to put up with. But, it takes longer on D3D than with EAX.

I'm really taken by this game. I thought I would really enjoy it, but I've absolutely fallen in love with it. :D
As much I don't like Apocalyptic environments, the gloomy, dark, depressing ones in PK really get me going. The music is very well-done, too. And, the fact that I have been without a Heaven and Hell shooter plays a factor. I've really missed slaying ghouls and monsters. In fact, even the new Doom won't be like the originals. Now, while I love stoy and think it's great, I still think the old Dooms were great. This game is what the FPS originally was, with the Technology of what they are today. It's a simpler Shooter Gallery with rediculously fun weapons, tons of enemies, and loads of fun.

Other than the AI not presenting a challenge, aside from brute numbers; I give this demo a Ten out of Ten.

Good job, People Can Fly, you guys have captured something we lost a long time ago. Even Serious Sam was disatisfying, but Painkiller stands out. Well, at least to the imaginative, gloomy guy like me. :)

BTW: For those of you who like this, I highly recommend Requiem: Avenging Angel.
While it tends to get boring at points, the opening escape from hell is what this game reminded me of. Partly because you're in Purgatory, partly because of the painful screams.

Uh, yeah. Play the Boss level, there is a Chaingun there, my Commie friend. :)

I enjoyed PK a lot more than UT2004. The vehicles were one big dissapointment...

PK owned cos it was just none-stop action, quite difficult too, and UT2004 is a cross between UT and UT2003 so it's all good =).

Agreed. Painkiller got me totally immersed just like Ghost mentioned. I have never seen an end boss looking better/more terrifying than in PK. So   for people can Fly. This demo looked really polished.
When I first saw the movies I wasn't really excited, but when I played the demo I found the whole scenery, gameplay, unique weapons, enemy characters (e.g. the medieval knights) really well done.
Well I guess I'll spend even more bucks on great games this year!

I've had a good amount of fun just blowing crap up in PK, its just satisfying.
Now UT2004 would likely be great with a lot of friends, but for just pubbing it I can't really stay interested.

PK is about blowing the shit out of everything that mov... no just blowing the shit out of everything. The player is even rewarded for just fireing at walls to see which ones will fall down.

I thought it was really fun. I'll probably buy it when I get money :D I agree with Ghost.

That you just mention the flesh throwing zombies indicates you didn't even finish the first level. The second is really challenging, with many, and I mean MANY sword swinging soldiers running at you.
It's not really a dumb run and gun shooter, it does require some skill. The levels are much more interactive than Serious Sam, in PK you have to use the environment at your advantage. You'll have to run up stairs to avoid the enemies and throw grenades at them. You'll often have to switch weapons for different enemies, it's not like you can run around with a rocket launcher and kill everything.
There are small dog-like skeletons running at you with high speed, they are hard to hit with the stake gun, you'll have to use the elektrogun for them.
The action is IMHO more intense than SS. The bosses are even more intimidating than in SS, a 50 meter tall demon swinging a huge battlehammer at you.
It's possible that you just don't like these kind of games, but it's definitely not a bad game in its genre. IMHO it's the best in it's genre. Until SS2 comes out that is (no the second encounter isn't really SS2)

I agree with you, maybe cause I didnt give it enough of a play, but I found it rather repetetive, and It gave me that headache from look at moving blackness for an hour.

i really enjoyed playing around with the physics, first game i have really played with some much stuff with physics. well that and maxpayne 2. i loved the bit with all the hanging bodies annd all the brick walls on the boss level, great gun shooting a nade at it and watching all the bricks fly aroudn the map

Well, looks like we can start talking about Loincrabs, instead of Headcrabs, thanks to Painkiller. :)

PK is awsome!
UT2004 Is awsome!
I enjoy dark gritty bloody gory games. :) PK all the way.
On the other hand i enjoy fast paced shooters likt UT2004. :)

yeah I noticed that too...

I really enjoyed PK. I though the boss fight at the end of the demo was insane. I like how when you shoot the badguys witht he stakegun, it impales them, and they fly back, sticking to a wall, if one is behind them. It just has a good feel to it. I don't like to new UT2k games, I think they are not good. UT2k4's vehicles are not original, some would even say they were copied from Halo. Now theres a game with a good feel to it. To bad the netcode is garbage! :(

I certainly didn't enjoy it. No ducking. Oh yeah, and pretty much everything else was crappy.

Copied from Halo? Wtf you talking about? The only thing that even comes close is the scorpion thing, except for the fact that is has a rear mounted whip-gun, and dual wings...I dont see the resemblance. except maybe the color. launch a lawsuit bud :)

weee.. so much fun. Although, I was too infatuated with getting screenshots, so I kept dying..

Ah!! What is it with demos (and god forbid full games) with no save options?!?! Blasphemy!

Other than that I thought it fun. I was hoping for more guns but considering it's just a demo, 4 is fine.

the full game only has 5 guns, but to make up, theyve given each one 3 different firing modes

<3

I still haven't had any time to play it since I first did like 2 days ago, but I'll be sure to ;)

its hard :( augh
and I still don't really "get it" but whatever. and um, yeah. The demo doesn't do it justice I think. can't even save, damn.

I didn't care for the PK demo really.
Side step...shoot
Side step....shoot
Run backwards while hopping....shoot.
Some what boring to me.

UT2k4, now that's a nice demo. ;)
I play that quite often.

I thought it was a bit hard at first but once you get into the style of gameplay it encourages it can become quite easy, it stays challengeing though which alot of other receant games don't.

Can't really see what else you do in UT2k4, it too is sidestepping, jumping and some dodgejumping. Not that it is a bad thing, but it's not a bad thing in PK either.
It's not just sidestepping..... shoot, that makes it sound boring, it's madness when there are 20 knights running at you, and those pesky skeletons that are impossible to hit.
I can't understand how someone could find the Palace map boring, it's pure adrenaline from the beginning till the end. Unless you haven't played Palace that is.... :stare:

I found it pretty boring. The physics is amazing and actually used compared to MP2, and the graphics are pretty (and fast at 4xAA/16xAF) and immersive (better than some "realistic" games). But the enemies... I just happen to like getting close and personal with badass foes. They dont scare me, that's the problem. They just look hilarious :)
Also I prefer having a reason for fighting them. A cutscene saying *why* I should nail zombies to the wall (and why I'm there) would have been nice.

Personally I think its an awfull waste of great graphics and physics. Maybe the full game will be good if one play it through.

I think the thing about this game is that it fits into my category of 'possibly randomly generated games'. In the future maybe someone will design the random FPS maker. You hit a button and it churns out a random story, a character, a bunch of random maps, a bunch of weapons and a bunch of enemies and that's it; it goes on store shelves. Can you get enjoyment out of a game like this? Of course. Is it a more enthralling experience than a well designed level with a well written story and fleshed out characters, etc? Of course not.

When I started the demo, I walked up and got the first weapon.
My screen flashed. I just got hit and there was an enemy.
I watched him do his motion then he started to fling something else at me.
I tapped left....he missed. Shot his head. OK next enemy. I could run down and back with out any of them hitting me. The next levels they chased you but you can run strait backwards and just shoot them point blank with no real challenge.
UT2k3 is challenging to actually hit someone because the other player is also sidestepping and jumping.
You have a mission whether it is getting the flag back, getting the next point or objective. Or complete DM (Don't play this as much).
Thats the difference. IMO ;)

I thought it was really fun, I like the feel of the game or the "old school" style it reminds me of unreal 1. I love how interactive it is. Doesn't look like half life 2 will have any better physics than PK. I am trying to think of what advantage half life 2 has over this game besides plot and general game play. Sure the cool looking faces.... but, that isn't really a huge advantage it's more of a perk like moving clouds over nonmoving clouds :P. We won't notice it while running around shooting enemys. I loved that first gun you have The spikes that twirl around cutting up whatever gets in its way, that's just fun as hell. And then third level with that end boss the lighting, the huge towers crumbling over the getting shot hundreds of feet into the air, this game is really fun im going to go play it again :P.

One word... 'ducking'.

Nothing too important then........

honestly why is the abuility to duck such an important part of gameplay in a game as fast paced as this?

I'd hardly call it 'fast paced'... :|

Even then it's needed anyway... dodging the flying bones and all? Yeah, it'd be handy there, no? NO?!
