Did the PS2 start out as badly as the PS3?

I wonder if any of you remember how the playstation 2 fared in its first year or so. The PS3 is getting less and less appealing by the day next to the 360 and wii. So, was it like this with the ps2 or did it come out swinging?

I thought the PS2 was sold out everywhere like the Wii if I'm not mistaken.
I probably am though.

I think the PS2 was pretty well recieved and had lots of gaming support (IE lots of titles) not to mention it was reasonably priced and didnt cause any issues like massive widescale failures or deaths resulting to the release...

ps2 had a lot of launch games. i love ps2 because they still support it. heck they even supported the ps1 until i think 2003?

Well quite a few third party developers outside of Sony still produce games for the thing.

PS2 happened to be awesome. PS3 is just shit...

The PS2 was a smash hit, confirmed by FFVIII. The PS3 thus far has been nothing like this.

FFVIII/IX are PS1 games you mean X and above (excluding the MMO) I figure.

The PS2 actually had one of the worst launch lineups I can remember. It still sold by the truck load.

Yeh, but deservingly so. Any console that can both entertain my parents and girls I knew who previously hated all video games is doing something very right.

Idunno about resonably priced. I remember it being $1000+ at launch, and the PS3 is $1200 here.

Jesus, I still remember seeing Final Fantasy X for the first time and being COMPLETELY flabbergasted. The character models. The insane spell effects. The mind ****ing cut scenes. Gaming wasn't getting any better looking than THAT :O

Its really too early to tell how it will do even compared to its previous iterations. Same goes for the 360. Halo will sell loads of units of hardware and software, just as FFXIII and MGS4 will. The games will tell the sotry of how well these systems do. PS3 will probably never be quite as overwhelmingly popular as the PS2 was though, just as I doubt if the 360 will sell more units than the original xbox.

I remember I had a friend pay $900 for ps2 on ebay right after it came out. Crazy bastard. I also recall a few grandmas getting ripped off by paying $900 for an empty box.

PS2's launch lineup WAS horrendous. Man, that was a long time ago now... what was it, 2001? I got one a month or so after launch for $350, but PS2 was WAY more successful than PS3... everywhere was sold out for a long time.

PS2 won that generation. PS3 did not win this one (I'd say that Wii did, but given how different it is from the PS3/360 it's hard to really specify).

If I remember properly, the PS2 came out in 2000, and it wasn't until 2001 when GTA3 came out that the PS2 started to become worthwhile.

I think I got PS2 the day or two after it came out. First ps2 title I ever gotten was Tekken Tag... man that game was ****ing fun....

Tekken Tag was one of the couple of good launch titles, along with SSX.

I also had fun with the Bouncer, despite the fact that it was short and was generally regarded as a shitty game by most of people...

If I remember correctly, I had a PS1, but really just wanted a PS2 because my dad said no. Then again, I loved games on the PS1, and figured PS2 would have great games *and am I glad I bought it in 2002...* Got Final Fantasy X, Dragon Warrior 8, and all sorts of games....probably the best purchase I've ever made besides the computer :O

And E, what are you talking about, Tekken Tag was shit. I bought it thinking it would be awesome like Tekken 2, but no, I cried...ALOT!
