.. default textures and meshes?

I mean don't get me wrong, both games do have their own unique look, but at the same time look 'very similar'.

I've noticed it in a few screenshots certain textures looking similar in both games/meshes having a similar body mass/shape in both games and to be honest it's made me wonder :|
 
The only big equal thing I find in both games is the water.

Other than that I never really noticed anything else. Body mass/shape - it's the right body mass/shape for humans, so yeah, you can say they're kind of similar :p
 
The engine would'nt of included ANY textures, meches, etc etc, nothing but a big pile of code thats the base of the engine.

If you think you see a texture thats the same of hl2s, its not, its just the engines are both the same so there going to have a "samey" look and feel to them. Like playing unreal then playing a game useing its engine, its looks quite samey.
 
Of course, both the games have a kinda gritty feel to them, maybe it's that?
 
They both use the same rendering engine, so certain textures will looks the same.
