Different HL2 sound problem

when i run hl2 on 5.1 settings, the sound is unbeleivably messed up. its not a stutter but its really scratchy and it echos all the time. character voices are even cut short or sped up some times so you cant tell what the hell is going on. if i switch over to a 2 speaker setting the problems are there but on a minescule scale. now i ask you WTF am i suposed to do. ive tryed updateing my sound drivers and reinstalling the game and neither worked.

here are my specs:
3.0GHz pentium
1gig ddr ram
80gig 7200rpm hd
sound blaster live!
radeon x800 pro

I had sound troubles along the same line too. I have the Intel motherboard D925XCV which has on-board 7.1 sound (which works fine). Half Life 2 only plays on the two front speakers. Both my system and the game options are set to 5.1 surround and I have the latest drivers. I have another computer with an SB Live! card and I'll see if it works better on that job. The first Half Life had excellent sound and I expect HL2 will if I can get it to work.

yes. ive never met a game that geve trouble until hl2

i just tryed deleting the source sound.gcf and re dling it, to no avail.
