Different sort of sound problem, clicking?

Just wondering if anyone else is getting this problem:

In certain areas of the game I get a strange clicking/crackling sound which repeats until I get out of that area. It seems to be texture related, particularly when there are a lot of steel pipes around or I'm in tunnels. If I face away from the textures it stops immediately.

Anyone else getting this? It seems to be different to the stuttering problem which I'm not suffering from at all.

Running a P-IV 2.4ghz, 9600xt, audigy 2, dx9.0c, winxp sp2 and all latest drivers.

Any ideas much appreciated!

I say turn-off EAX.

If it's not turned-on in the first place, try turning-off hardware accelerating of sound through the Directx console (Go to Start=>Run=>dxdiag=>OK)

Edit: Though i'm not sure it'll work since you said it's texture-related.

Hmmm, didn't think HL2 used EAX? Seems odd since as I said it's only certain areas which leads me to suggest it's only certain textures causing it.

Haven't tried turning down hardware acceleration though. Always figured that was a last resort and thought "well why should I have to" In theory it should be possible to get working without doing that surely?!

I got the same problem and then realized that it only happened when I was near radiation. I think it's supposed to happen.

thats not a problem then lol...near fire is also ok

Only problem i have with sound is that HL2 seems to speed up my winamp when im listening to a song to about 2x speed...WHY!? i don't know!

I thought that for a bit, but it's a different sort of clicking to that, kinda hard to explain. And if I'm in a radiation area then turning around on the spot (away from the textures causing the problems) shouldn't get rid of it if it was just the radiation?
