I am thinking about purchasing a Digi Cam here shortly. I am willing to spend a good amount of money on one too. I have been looking at the Nikon Coolpix 8800 and am thinking of going with this.

But I still want your recommendations. Price range $500-$1000.

Sony DSC-W1. best camera ever.

Nikon is an extremely good, time tested brand- im sure Sony's are good, but I would go Nikon

W1 is an awesome camera for it's price range (~350$) but for 500-1000$ I'd be considering Nikon or Canon.
I have not seen any reviews on any Nikon cameras in that price range but I know the Canon Rebel has gone down a lot in price. I keep up to date more with Canon stuff. I know Nikon is top quality though. Maybe you can get a good deal on a 8700 Nikon.

I have a Canon PowerShot A300, I didn't buy it because it was a gift but it's a pretty decent camera. 3.2 mega pixels, it does the job.

That kindof price bracket puts you in range of some serious DSLR goodness.

How much flexibility do you want?
Do you come from an analogue SLR background?
How much photography have you done in the past; how experienced are you?

In the meantime, check out www.imaging-resource.com and their 'dave's picks' section for some pretty reliable roundups.

I saw a TV advertisment for a new Sony Digicam thats coming out. It shows the people recording stuff straight to dvd, then playing it in DVD players! Looks incredible. Next time it is on, I will note down teh model no. of it so I can post some sort of link to it.

takes amazing video, amazing pictures (if u know how to use it), and has a big ****ing lcd screen.

I found a site that has the Nikon 8800 for $599 thats after $100 mail in rebate. I also have 0 experience in photography. Now you will probably say buy a cheaper camera just to get yourself into it. I can afford the Nikon so I will probably get the Nikon. I am just going to read up on it a little more and maybe make my purchase next week.

Hmmm. Now I am looking at a D70.

Unless you have another 500/1000 bucks to spend, don't get a DSLR. A Nikonn 8800 has a nice range of focal lengths for you to play around with that would be prohibitively expensive on an SLR; and as you haven't much experience, it'd be best to go for something more flexible in terms of out-of-the-box functionality.

Besides, the 8800 is a fantastic camera, the resolutions great, it's quick, the colours good... what more do you want? :)
