my friend and I are going to be splitting a digital camera (so we can spend a shitload of $$$) under $1,000 would be preferable, but im looking for people who have recently purchased a camera, or know someone who has, to say what it is and if you are happy. I've been doing research but I'd like some input from an objective source! thanks in advance for taking the time to help me (i think we have decided to go digital, but if you have a great standard camera and want to tell us, feel free!)

I would guess it depends on what purpose you want to use it for.

well, we are NOT professionals, but we do enjoy the wilderness (hiking camping etc). Mostly a way to take high quality pictures, mostly nature shots (not limited to still life). Unfortunatly it will be a blend of panoramic views and upclose shots of plants/animals. I know my way around photography, but in the past 3 years have fallen waaaaay behind technology and consumer reports can only offer so much insight. really any information is helpful (your favorite camer for example would open up an avenue for us to explore). just speak your mind and I will take whatever I get! its better than nothing.

I've got a Casio Exilim, and I like it. It's casual use.

Splitting the cost of a $1000 camera with a friend? Sounds like baaaad news

haha, well we both have the funds to buy it out from the other, but we do this with everything (cept PCs) all our consoles, tvs, dvds, dont worry about that :)

ty for that kirov ill check it out

i can personally recommend the Fuji S7000, not expensive and takes some nice pictures, of which i have taken over 3000 in the last two months.

i like:

the feel, erganomics
the zoom
the EVF
the price
runs on ordinary AAs in a pinch (i have three sets of 2500mAh Ni-MH)
the superbs macro/movie modes
the FZ ring, too slow for high speed SLR style zooming but much nicer than the W/T buttons for making fine zoom adjustments on a moving subject
xD and CF I & II support simultaneously (currently using 1GB xD card, nice and fast to write)

i don't like:
the high lowest iso setting (ISO200, ISO160 in auto mode)
slow zoom on high resolution jpegs (during playback)
no RAW motordrive

all in all i like the camera, i tend to actually use things i buy and this one has already been dropped in sand and it cleaned up fine, solid bit of kit, very happy with my purchase. if i had £700 to blow i'd probaly have tried to stretch to a nice DSLR. i've bought mine a 55-58mm adapter tube, UV filter to keep sand out of the actual zoom mechanism (i do a lot of shooting on the beach) and a flower hood.

other models similar to the S7000 are the S5500 and the new S9000, check out www.dpreview.com for reviews and talk on the best digicams around:)

thank you so much! very very helpful :E

I'd go DSLR

If you only want to spend around a thousand, I'd probably get a EOS 350D and a 17-85 IS or if you want to spend more (which you should) I'd get a 350D or 20D with a 24-105L.

Canon EOS 300D is my camera of choice although I really have no idea how much it is now. I bought it about a year ago at 600 pounds (my computer has lost its pound sign since the re-format :()

You can spend all the money you like, but if you don't know how to frame a shot your money will all be wasted.

So, first - buy an 'idiots guide to photography' book.

Then, go to www.dpreview.com and filter the search results by price and function.
