Who here has owned / owns a digital camera? I own a very cheap model (not even 1 megapixel) but I want to buy a better one (probably in the January sales). Does anyone have any reccomendations? Preferably I want a 3 megapixel camera, as cheap as possible, but i'm open to suggestion. Also post anything else about digital cameras: Why you use them, Advantages / Disadvantages, etc. I really know almost nothing about them, so please share any useful knowledge. Thanks! :cheese:

Uk Europe or USA?

Anyway... I think theres a good Camera comparision site around, I'll google for you :)

There you are 4 nice cameras for you try look at. Read the reviews though, and read up

Those are some nice cameras, but a tad expensive for me. I may have to settle for a 2 megapixel cam. ;( I found quite a good 3mp one at argos for £89.99 (about $150). It'shere if anyones interested. Opinions? No-ones told me what cam they have yet.

It's better to go with name brand cameras. They generally more reliable.

Yeah, go with a good Canon, Nikon or whatever. I have a great Nikon 6mp camera, truly superb quality.

The main problems with digital cameras are - chromatic abraision (the blue glow round certain objects), the fact that every image gets 'processed' on most cameras and that can lead to lots of nasty artifacts such as noise on the image, the speed with which most cameras actually run (usually a lot slower than a 35mm equivalent due to memory speeds etc), and the fact that the resolution lower than 3megapixels is usually rubbish.

Ive owned 2 Canon Digicams, 1 Sony and I've tried numerous other cameras and IMO the best cameras are made by Canon in the digicam market.

i've done this research (want one for x-mas), and found that the hottest camera of the year is the canon powershot a70. Awsome camera, great image quality, lots of features, good battery life, it has it all.
here are the specs, and a review.

Thats a 3mp camera. If you only want a 2 mp, go for an a60. same exact camera, just lower MP... Also, there is the a80, which i think is 4mp, but i'm not sure if its the exact same camera otherwise...

i want a digital camara for recording shit on the spot. portable but to expensive

I own a high end, Sony DSC V-1. Check out www.dpreview.com for intense reviews of cameras.

I chose this camera because I wanted 4-6 Megapixel & 4x or greater zoom. This camera came out with both of those, plus is a compact camera & light--nice bonus. However it is not shirt-pocket compact. It it to thick (front-to-back) for pockets in general. A large coat pocket works.

Review of V1: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscv1/

The V1 has excellent color accuracy and maintain low noise in low light. I was almost going to buy the Pentax Optio 550, but the review showed that it had very bad noise in lower light situations. There are probably better ones out now as they keep improving.

With 5 megapixels I use the camera for lots of things...
You can photograph an 8'x11" page and read it on the computer. Great for copying documents when I'm doing research and no scanner handy.
I was able to photograph album covers at high enough resolution to read all the text on the back. (tripod important, remote control good too)
The camera has neat little features that are usable on rare occasions. Time lapse, nightshot(IR photography), night framing (using IR emitted by the camera to frame a normal exposure).
Macro phtogoraphy for phtoography things close up like small objects--great for people who sell stuff on ebay.
When had weird stuff growing in garden was able to post photos and get accurate answers.
Can photograph old pictures/painting that can't be scanned for archiving

For digital cameras, I perfer Canon, Olympus or Sony.
If I went and bought one right now, I would buy the Canon A80 4 Megapixel although the A70/A60 are great too.
Awesome lenses and all the manual adjustments for aperture/shutter etc.

I have a 2MP Nikon coolpix 2500, which I like. I thought it was the best 2MP camera (of those I have seen photos by) when I bought mine ~1 year ago. I still think Nikons are good (stay away from the coolpix 2100 though)

But I hear the Canon Ax0 (where x=a number) are the way to now.

For a cheap 2MP camera, the Minolta Dimage x20 also looks nice for it's price though.

Also, don't pay too much attention to MP. A 3MP camera with good optics is a better camera than a 4Mp one with worse optics.

I have a sony cybershot 3.2 MP camera, I bought it like 2 years ago when it was top of the line.

It takes nice pictures for its age.

I just recently bought a Sony DSC-F717 CyberShot. Its so great! It has lots of feature support and many different functions. its 5 megapixels. Id upload a shot if it felt like waiting for my damn 56k to send it!
