Hi There,
I'm new to this site, but have so far found it profoundly entertaining and welcoming, and I just thought it might be time to set off a new thread myself if anyone might be interested. I'm a Film student at the University of Teesside in the north-east of the UK, and we are currently writing up a report on the "Digital Revolution in Contemporary Cinema". It's a highyl entertaining and interesting subject, arguing that CGI is so ultra-realistic in many blockbusters today, that if it is presented as perfectly plausible, it literally becomes part of the environment.
Such is the effect of this that although audiences have obviously never seen dinosaurs before, Jurassic Park has, in essence, given popular culture a sub-concious representation of these beast that will stay within contemporary psyche. Last night I watched "War of the Worlds" (the new one) on DVD, and was blown away by the level of detail. ILM have always been on the ball, but the opening 30mins DID actually make me feel as though this invasion could've easily been happening in my back garden. The use of scale, and the pursuit of Tom Cruise through the crowd without a wide-angle shot really threw me into the thick of the film, and I could almost imagine the panic.
Anyway...it would be good to receive some feedback on other peoples experiences of digital plausability, and what they think it will bring to our understanding of reality in the next few decades.
