DX9 does add some pretty effects, but it's just small stuff. The game will look just fine in DX8.1, don't worry.

Also, I'm fairly certain I remember reading something about the E3 demos being made in DX8.1, but that interview may have gotten it wrong.

You don't lose the shiny stuff, just some small effects. Nothing you'd notice without being really picky and comparing them frame-by-frame. I still got the shiny stuff on my Geforce 4 ti4200.

heres a little sample of my GeForce 4 Ti4200 using DX8.1 on the source demo.

It does look better but my free picture hosting sucks.

errr... isnt that a video?

Yes it's from the video. I was just referring to the video as the 'source demo'. I was trying to make the point that it should look exactly like that in the real game run on DX8.1. As far as I can gather, DX8.1 can run things like shiney metal OK, but it's just some complex effects we'll miss out on. Sorry if i'm totally wrong here, this is just the impression I get reading about DX8.1 and DX9.

no that video is showing what it looks like with a dx9 card, its doing things like hdr etc, dx8.1 can't do that.

eh? not sure what you mean, thats a video, it would look the same if you ran it on a computer from 1996, it doesnt use your video card in any way other then to play a video file, just like if you watch a movie on your computer, or anything else of that nature. the video itself was recorded by valve, and as its using things like HDR, (which nvidia cards can't do at present) it was done on a 9800pro.

like I said in my post above, Nivida's cards can't do HDR, which is what that video is showing off, meaning it was made on an ATI card (9800pro)
