Whats the difference, they were both updated june 08, but you need to pay for direct X 9 (?6!).

I ask, because Half-life 2 episode one continues to not work (driver error- but last time it actually blue screened!) and according to the settings, which i can't change, it works with direct x 9. I have direct X 10, but that doesn't seem to be working :(

Help!

Direct X 9 is free i don't know were you saw you have to pay for it, but it's not true
Direct X 10 is Vista exclusive and is the next step up from Direct X 9. Very few games actually utilise Direct X such as Crysis and Assassins creed. Half-Life 2 and Source engine don't use Direct X 10 and use Direct X 9.

If you have Direct X 10 it can play all games from Direct X 9,8,7 and so on.

Edit: I've just looked at some of your other threads and it seems you have Windows XP. If so you shouldn't be using Direct X 10. Direct X 10 is Vista only, and you are using an unofficial and unsupported hacked version of it. And that will cause problems. What Graphics card do you have? i have the feeling your installing incorrect drivers and Direct X versions and making things worse.

oh bugger, that would explain a lot. thanks. i got it from games for windows (???) how do i uninstall it???

damn it! direct x is installed and should be working, so it can't be that thats causing the crash.

DX10 basically has alot more colour variations than 9 or otherwise. A good example is the Leet World Machinima. Recently they started using a DX10 Graphics card and previously they used a DX9, you can see the difference of colour in the Clothes of the CSS skins.

Using Direct X 10 on XP is going to cause problems. The main issue is that you have installed loads of hacked files that were designed to run on Vista to work on Xp and that will interfere with the Xp's version of Direct X 9. It doesn't matter that you have installed it, the fact remained it was never supposed to be installed on XP in the first place, hence the reason Microsoft doesn't allow you to download Direct X 10 if you have XP. When downloading important system software such as Direct X and Drivers try to do a little research or ask, don't go around installing willy nilly and using hacked up versions which will cause problems. Also you still haven't told me what your Graphics card is. Right now you are doing more harm than good. Stop and just give us some details on your computer. When you get the blue screen, does it mention a driver name at the bottom, should have ATI in the name?.

nah... i don't think it installed, at least, dxdalg still registers as direct x 9. and the blue screen was that, a blue screen, not the blue screen of death (no information)

but after disabling all of my background software i finally got it to work past the car bit (and in retrospect, it was so worth it).
