Direct3D

Hookay, I went down to le gameshop today and bought myself a copy of Anarchy Online, and then went home to install it.
Installation goes ok, and registration also works fine. Then I procede to the next screen, where one selects character and hardware setup.
But, when I click the button to the right to try to select a Direct3D device, I get this error message:
D3DXGetDeviceCaps() Failed. This is most likely due to a bug in the drivers. You can try to switch your desktop resolution to 16bit, and then try again. If this problem persists, please contact AO support
I've tried reinstalling my drivers, but that didn't do it , and the desktop resoloution IS on 16bit.
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

(I'm using a Geforce4 MX 440, btw)

Same card here, I was able to get past and do all what you just said. Only I didn't get to play it cause it wanted Credit Card info to sign up for the free few days trial

Is it a different version to the one you can download for free from their site?

Try installing the latest DirectX. Some games wont work without DX9 even though they don't use any of the new features for it, or something weird like that

Yeah, I haven't got the version you dl from their site, I got the retail version instead. Didn't ask me for any credit-card numbers, which is cool, because I'm only planning to play the free month (got the game for 8$, so it's no big deal) =)

And I've downloaded DirectX9 from the Microsoft site, and it made squat difference

also see if you can patch the game up to the latest version....

ur kidding me. i swear i really though hl2 was opengl because d3d games suck ass. and that nvidia does better in d3d benchmarks, thats why their cards suck for opengl game benchmakrs, and ati beats em all the time.

Yep you have that backward too I believe. Nvidea makes great openGL cards, that's why Doom 3 is optimised for them. Raedon uses Direct X, the newest use DX9 to their advantage. The nvidea cards can run DX8 (and 8.1 I think) pretty well but really come to their knees on DX9 stuff. The new Nvidea (5950 Ultra i believe) can out class the 9800 XT in OpenGL, though on most games that are available now the high end raedons will do just fine the the open GL, it's future games like Doom3 that some options may need to be turned off for.

lol!, well it's better for you to know it now rather than discover that HL2 doesn't support OpenGL at all when you'll run it for the first time.... lol DirectX programming seems to be soooo cool Yippi, I have Visual Studio .Net 2003... guess what my next proggy will be?
