In other news from GamesFest, DirectX 11 was unveiled.

The company calls DirectX 11 a "big step forward for gaming, adding features onto existing DirectX 10".

Key components of DirectX 11, will include:

o Full support (including all DX11 hardware features) on Windows Vista as well as future versions of Windows
o Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
o New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor
o Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
o Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close

damn dx10 isnt even the standard yet as most people are still using dx9

they wont make it free ..it reflects their bottom line so wont change it in this generation ..I think it will eventually be free when full game downloads become the norm over XBL ..I'm so sick of slapping in disks. That said I paid $34.95 for 12 + 1 months of xbox Live on sale through Dell ..seen it a couple of times since so the next time there's a sale I'll pick it up ..even though I rarely play over Live

Hmm, possibly for the next gen Xbox? I remember reading about it awhile back that Microsoft wanted to create an entirely "virtual console" which probably means downloadable games to the new box.

I'm just saying that XBL needs to be free if they can make LIVE free for Games for Windows... I mean when they first introduced LIVE for GfW, they wanted to charge for multiplayer service, so I assume they use the same model after XBL esp with the whole marketplace deal and stuff that's coming soon. My reasoning is how much different is gaming from a console to PC when it comes to going online?

i hope they do a thread merge

and 34.95 for 13 months is a steal. I pay 49.99 for only 12. Tell me ur secret stearn

I don't understand this cross-platform play. Does it mean if you have Games for Windows or w/e its called you can play someone on a 360? Is it for all games or just M$ ones?

You'll be able to play with Xbox 360 users on the PC.

They tried it once with Shadowrun which sucked so, so much.

There is no way Microsoft will be making XBL free anytime soon. The only reason they made GFW free is cause no one will pay for it, especially with other much better free services like Steam. GFW is a flop and Microsoft knows it.Mulitiplayer on PC has always been free bar MMOS, and Microsoft have finally realised they can't come in late and start charging for it. So in short the difference is that on the 360 Microsoft hold the keys, you must use XBL for multilayer you have no choice, while on the PC you do have a choice it's wide open. No chance is Microsoft going to give up the revenue it gets from XBL subscriptions.

No. COD4 doesn't support it.

The only game that supports crossover, iirc, is Shadowrun.

So what are the new graphical features?

The most important feature is advanced tessellation. It allows for polygons to be divided multiple times, adding a large amount of detail at little cost of performance. Current ATI cards that support DX 10.1 can already do this, although not to the extent that DX11 will allow:

Another welcomed feature is multi-threaded resource handling, which will allow for improved functionality from multi-core CPUs in a gaming environment. Currently, the benefit of quad-core CPUs over dual-core is not very clear in games, with chips like the E8400 matching and even outperforming the more expensive Q9450. Although GPU limitation may play a role in these results, if the multiple cores in the CPU can be utilized correctly, we may see these limitations decrease.

ok makes sense now... ahh well one can only hope lol.

The shading on the 2nd creature there looks sub par, like if I literally turned the shadow level in HL2 from max to min.

Perhaps because it's only demonstrating tessellation on a model devoid of any textures or shading.

Tessellation looks great.

The tessellation feature is going to be great, because normal maps need to seriously gtfo.

That tessellation picture is a bit unfair as an example because I've never seen a flat shaded model in a video game. The left would hardly be distinguishable from the right if the left had smooth shading.

Tessellation has the disadvantage that things can get too curvy because you have little control over what edges need to be sharp and what edges need to be rounded. The only way to get a sharper edge without decreasing the subdivision amount is by adding more polygons to the sharper edge. At least, that's my (limited) experience with 3D modeling and subdivision.

Tesselation = smoothing
Normal Maps = detail

They solve two totally seperate issues. So no, normal maps aren't going away, and shouldn't gtfo.

Why do so many people hate disks? Futhermore, why do so many of you put so much faith into the servers of companies like Valve and Microsoft? You do realize once MS makes the Xbox console brand into a fully "virtual console" you'll be at their total mercy right?

For example, if they ever deem that certain games that you like are no longer making them profit, (and for whatever reason, you no longer have the games you like so much on your 360 HD, or your 360 HD has failed), they could simply pull them from their servers to save space. I don't like the idea nor do I put that much faith into big business. Downloadable full-games should stay optional imo.

I like retail hard-copies, because if there's ever any games that's no longer available on the store front, (games that have become exceedingly rare) you can always get them on the wondrous world of the internet(s)....legally, and without the bugs/trojans that could possibly come from torrent software. Yes, an Xbox can contract trojans/viruses.

So STFU. Some MS spies could be reading through forums like these and taking notes. :p

Discs piss me off on PC, because there's absolutely no reason for them to exist. With consoles however, data is read directly off the disc and I totally agree that downloadable games should stay optional, especially on the PS3 side where the discs can hold 50 gigs of data. I'd much rather save space and keep it on the disc.
