Sorry if this is considered one of those will my pc run this game threads. I'm new to the forums and I was just wondering if someone knew what cards were compatible with DirectX9. I don't have that much money but I'm saving up for a decent laptop that'll run half-life 2 close to its best ability. I'll probably need an alienware but those r like 3k. I've been looking around and i've finally found one....

You think the GeForce4 440 GO will run this well? The specs r better than my pc except I have a Radeon 9700 128 mb on mine (not pro). The pc's a 1.7 Ghz and it's running pretty slow. I just need a new computer and I'd prefer a laptop for my own reasons.

Again, sorry if you're annoyed by these kind of posts but i'd appreciate any help since most of you have more knowledge on this than I do.

NO, don't get the Geforce 4, it's a piece of shit. Go with the Radeon 9700 it's DX9 compatible.

The pc's a 1.7 Ghz and it's running pretty slow

you probably need more ram if it's slow

Well I have 512 but I think it's my hard drive. Any game that uses any 3d graphics basically shuts down with an error while i'm playing it now. I've tried formatting but it's still messed up. I might just need a new one, had this one for awhile.

Ugh....just realized there was a hardware forum. Sorry.

Have you downloaded new drivers and keep DX updated and everything?

Do it properly and you'll have quite a nice speedy system

I have a 9700 non pro and it's still one of the fastest cards for HL2 out there. Only the 9700 pro, 9800, and 9800 pro can beat it!

GF4440 is worth 1/4 of what a 9700 is! Even my gf has one of them! lol

Your computer is perfectly fine, that laptop would not run HL2 in DX 9 mode, hell, it probably wouldn't run it in 8.1 mode. Go buy a new hard drive if you think that's the problem and if it doesn't fix it return it. My guess is you installed some crappy software that is screwing up your computer. But hell, if you really don't want that computer PM me and maybe I'll buy it as I need a new one for my GF ;).

GF4's aren't a piece of shit. They just aren't DX9 compatiable. They'll run HL2 just fine.

Now, the GeForce4 440 GO is a piece of shit. :P

MAN, if you want to play the latest game such as HL2, MP2, HALO, and CALL OF DUTY with all their technology is turnd on then go for Radeon card 9700 and above.

I say and you say NO to Nvidia.

Call of Duty shouldnt be in that list gorgon...quake3.....

GF4 440/420's and all that other MX stuff IS a piece of shit

The Ti stuff is slightly better
and FX stuff, thats debatable....
:-P

quake3 is old man. what are you talking about.

Ya I think I'll just getta new harddrive, I just want a new laptop too though. I like them better than pc's, less space consuming. My room's full of wires so I just wish i could get a laptop I could take everywhere. So much more expensive though. I was looking at a dell site and they have laptops with like a 128mb radeon 9600.

LOL... I saw them benchmarks to

Lets hope them new 50's drivers do bugger all difference, so everyone abbandons nVIDIA and they can get on with making a good card again!

I wasn't sure if he was saying COD shouldn't be on the list cause it uses the Q3 engine and hence is OLD, so doesn't need a DX9 card...

jeez this is a really good laptop for the price, only 1k, I wish i could change the gfx card but it's not that easy for a laptop. That's the only problem about them, not as easily upgradeable. I wanna laaaptooop lol. I think that'd b pretty cool to play hl2 in the car and stuff...if I werent driving that is.

Honestly though, have you ever owned a laptop? I felt the same way as you and it ended up being the worst $1,000 I've ever spent. The laptop is complete crap with a 1.7 Celeron, 512 MB DDR, and some video card. I can't play CS on it with good frame rates. I bought it because I thought it would be fun to travel with it, the laptop has not left my house in over 6 months and it simply sits on my coffee table. If you travel a lot a laptop is a good buy, but if you travel on the occasional road trip it's a complete waste of money. However, choice is yours as it is your money .

Laptop's suck unless you travel alot

Well even in my own room, wish i could just take my laptop and lie down with it on the ground insteada bein stuck in this little corner all the time.

Laptops suck balls.... plus when u unplug them them always go into some stupid ultra slow 'economy' mode....

And lying or sitting with a laptop gives u a bad back/neck/legs..... it's a overated luxury. Sit in a chair with a table infront to be comfortable, so why get a laptop?

Call of duty uses the quake III engine.

I thought the same way, I tried it once and that is extremely uncomfortable. My advice is that you spend the $1,000 on upgrading your current computer and you should have a top of the line system which will play HL2 perfectly. If not you will be banging your head like I am doing now because that's a good $1,000 wasted. I will tell you now that playing games on a laptop completely sucks. The keyboard is much smaller, you need to buy a mouse which means you have to play at a desk taking away the point of a laptop, plus any good game will not get you playable FPS as the video cards cannot match the video cards PCs come with. If you still don't beleive me go to best buy and buy a laptop, try it out for a week and then return it. You will see that a laptop really isn't what it seems.

but always remember its not the whole engine. jedi knight2 uses Q3 too.

Q3 using R9800pro = over 300FPS
Jedi 2 using 9800pro= 140FPS
Call of duty using 9800pro= less than 80FPS

and both Jedi +COD use a modified version of Q3 engine.

Yup :dozey:. He already has the case, power supply, maybe memory, monitor and all that other crap. All he needs is a mobo, processor, good sound card and a 9800 pro. I would call that a monster PC.

Oh I thought he wanted a whole pc again.

1G will be just fine.

I agree with most of what you said, except halo, the gfx for that game suck. I've got a beta version, with all the effects maxed out and the res @ 1280X1024, the game looks and runs like SH**. Maybe its runs bad b/c its a beta, but i doubt the graphics will get any better

btw: 2.01Ghz, Radeon 9500P, 768MB RAM; there's no reason why it should skip with graphics that are only minutely better than HL1 and with such horrid textures. In general, console ports suck.

this isn't a flame, just statin facts here

Others like you experienced the same. and the reason is Beta version, Micorosft claimed that the final version will be 60% increased in every aspect of the game (over the beta).

ahhh thx for the info gorgon :-D. now, back to HL2, the ONLY game that matters :cheese:

ati 9500 up is the way to go and get good ram you should be fine. faster cpu does help but not where it counts which is gpu.

I agree that 9500 pro is a great card but not in this case, he already has a 9700 np, with my analysis that should be faster :dork:.

Hey thanks for the help everyone I guess I'll just spend the money towards my pc. You think the 9700 np could run hl2 at its max with a
2 Ghz + and 512 mb+ ?

yeah seems more then enough to play at 40fps at worst. Look into overclockable cards(models) some 9700 can be overclocked higher then others to get the most bang for your buck.
