just played CS:S for the first time... awesome. I had fun... but when I was setting it up i was worried that my Geforce FX 5900 Ultra was only reported as a DirectX 8.1 card... my software DirectX level was 9.0, but hardware said 8.1. I guess this is reasonable... even though I only got the card in January, when it was top dog. Does this mean I won't be able to see any DirectX 9.0 effects in HL2 or does this mean that I'll be able to see them, they will just have to be software rendered and thus slow my framerate down? I'm confused.

The FX line of cards didn't fully support Direct X 9, if I'm correct.

you can force your card to run in dx9 mode but you will take an enormous frame hit, as the Fx line (as Eon Blue said) didn't quite get dx9 down.. it says it can support it, but in practice it just doesnt perform.

so CS:S/hl2 will auto detect and set the level at dx8 because your card performs perfectly fine at that level.

as for missing effects I doubt you would notice anything really missing (shinyness is a bit more prevelant)
