On my HL2 game disk there is DirectX directory. There is dxsetup.exe and I think if you ran that it would correctly install directx.

Yeah, thanks, but i don't have my discs anymore. Could you possibly send me that file?

Well then you're f*cked.
lol

Seriously, the latest DirectX version is available for download from the Microsoft website. Google it (for some reason I find the searches on the Microsoft site to be basically nonfunctional).

Then your problem is not getting HL2 to work, its getting the latest DirectX onto your machine.

thats obvious..but i've installed directX at least 200 times in the last 2 days..someone give me the CORRECT way to to it damnit

If you've installed it 200 times and it hasn't worked, why do you think it'll work now? You're screwed, maybe your graphics card is DirectX 8.

that woudln't make sense..half life 2 has worked since 05. it just started doin this problem 2 days ago

Okay... What'd you do 2 days ago?

I was playing. and i put it in windowmode and it froze up.so i ctrl+alt+deleted it, went to restart and its coming up with that failedvertex buffer bull shit. Well, my directX is installed correctly, because i did some more test. so, its not that directX isn't working i dont' think.

Go into the start menu, hit run, type 'dxdiag' and hit enter, and run those tests, then get back to us.

go to Start/run and type dxdiag. This will check the directx on your computer.

yeah, i just figured that out on a website, it turned out, i did have it installed right. but then i updated my drivers and that solved the problems. SO ty guys a million :)

ilk 340, holy shit, its a bit simple, did you check what version your getting? cause version 10 ONLY runs on vista, making it useless, so get 9.0, and it should work, if still not, then why did you throw away ur discs? that was dumb, you not going to collect it? ok.... you can get it here,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
that is the right version of directX 9.0c you want, the end-user, you may have gotten developer, which is useless for you.

edit: oh crap all that typing for nothing? the prob got fixed? damn.
