DiRT 3 will boast more cars, more locations, more routes and more events than any other game in the series, including over 50 rally cars representing the very best from five decades of the sport. With more than double the track content of 2009's hit, DiRT 3 will see players start at the top as a professional driver, with a top-flight career in competitive off-road racing complimented by the opportunity to express themselves in Gymkhana-style showpiece driving events.

Two places shown were Finland and Sweden!

Going through DiRT 2 now and its probably the best racing game I have played to date. Its Forza graphics with fairly arcade style feel (doesn't push it like Need For Speed but it isn't too much of a sim)

DiRT 2 also had a fantastic soundtrack which I really hope 3 can beat.

Though it seems that without McRae around, these rally games have really turned in favor of Ken Block?

Dirt 2 was pretty much the only racing game I ever really liked. Though I doubt theres going to be much reason to get this one, since I doubt its much different.

Dirt 1 had all the cool vehicles, Dirt 2 was disappointing because it got rid of so many of the crazy vehicles, even though it improved everything else.

Hopefully this will get the best of both games.

Didnt try the first, but thought the second was pretty good in terms of non over-the-top racing games.

Dirt 2 was the only racing game ive ever bought and i have played plenty of racing games

I've not even gotten anywhere far in DiRT 2 :(

Keep getting occupied by other games.

Damn you, Codemasters!

Dirt 2 was ok, I never finished it so to speak because it was very repetitive. the first was really good too but wasn't as repetitive. i really hope they change that because I hate racing the same track like 20 times in career mode

I've always wanted to like a play dirt games but I am only intrested in the rally side of it which comes across as a very small part of the game. They seem to fill it with loads of other shitty events that are just boring. Will wait and see how it turns out tho.

They need to take some of the arcade out of it.

You shouldn't be able to slow down/stop so quickly. And the [external view] camera was really weird in DiRT [1], it makes the car seem to handle very strangely.

Haven't tried DiRT 2

Dirt 1 had a great variety of tracks, more rally events, and the hill climb events were epic. If Dirt 3 can fix those things that Dirt 2 lacks and perhaps fix Dirt 2's atrocious menu system, it will be near perfect.

I'm hoping any DLC for DiRT 3 is actual DLC, not more 5 dollar content unlocks like DiRT 2 has.

Also, more variety in the game modes. DiRT 1 had specific events for trucks/buggies and cars. While DiRT 2 has specific events still, some of them are still too similar, the only thing making them different is vehicle restrictions.

I personally think the balance now is perfect, if you play the PC version of DiRT with all assists off and max realism, I don't really feel the problems you describe.

And no, changing camera view does NOT make the car's handling magically change mid-game, if that is what you were implying.

I'm just saying I think it looks all wrong (and makes it hard for me to control in that view). Many others have claimed that the cars steer around the center of the car in DiRT (like a car with 4 wheel steering!), but I don't think that's really the case - I think it just looks wrong. It could very well be the handling characteristics of some of the cars, I don't know. I sort of put the blame on the camera, after hours of playing.

I've played probably one hundred 3D racing games, and I've never seen anything like it. The camera behaves nothing like Colin McRae (AKA the game that became DiRT). It was something in the change to the new graphics engine.

I was hoping that they would fix that, but I haven't played Dirt 2, so I don't know.

I can't really detail what I'm talking about since I haven't played it in a long time and I don't have it installed, but I was very disappointed with it. I can't even pinpoint exactly what I don't like, but I just know that I liked the way the external camera was in Colin McRae Rally 2005 just fine. It could be something stupid like too high or too low. I thought it was just the stiffness (camera trying to remain directly behind the car), but I can't remember.

Anyway, I wish racing games would be more like GTR 2, where you could put the camera anywhere you wanted, from any angle and any distance, and what would be even better: to let you save those custom views so you could cycle through them with the view button.

EDIT: Maybe it is just the tuning for the 4WD cars (the Mitsubishi Lancer stands out as one that really felt wrong) Here's something that might help me: http://community.codemasters.com/fo...ate-forcefeedback-wheel-settings-you-use.html

I've played DiRT since it's release. One thing that has always baffled me, is why in God's name did they make the default car tuning, the way that it is? It seems that they just used a whole series of random numbers or they gave it to the local office Chimp, who had seen a rally on TV once.
Anyway, what I've done (In my opinion), is replace the default values with something that makes the vehicles handle more realistically and behave more, as you would expect a car to perform.

Also, the cars stop way too fast, even like on dusty roads and in the rain. I guess all the cars have amazing ABS. :/ Now I'll admit, it's very difficult to get the right brake pressure in games like Richard Burns Rally, but THEY STOP TOO FAST in DiRT. That's the main challenge of a racing game in the first place, right? Anyone can hold down the throttle. It's in the application of the brakes where a race can be won or lost.

Personally I almost always play games from the Hood view these days anyway.

Cockpit views are usually terrible because of FOV etc they really give you a lot less vision than you'd get IRL driving in the cockpit.

Also, with regards to tuning, personally I'd like to see more games implement the Forza Motorsports system where you can share tuning in-game over the internet etc, at least for the consoles versions which can easily handle it via their PSN/XBL account systems.

In Forza 3 shared custom tuning has helped me win races quite a few times.

Either way, I race that much currently, and certainly not with pure simulation settings since I don't have a proper wheel and have to rely on using my joypad.

Oh, I never liked the hood view! But yeah, in the cockpit is clearly a disadvantage as far as field of view, and not only that but the A pillars, mud and rain lower visibility. It looks wicked though.

I pick either cockpit or one of the external views so I can watch the car slide around and stuff.

Honestly, I tend to favor whichever of those views that has the coolest sound. Often, the external view is less whiny and has the throat of the muffler grumbling and shit. If it sound cool, it makes me play better.

Never been a fan of the DiRT series, mind I'm not really into racing period. Although Gran Turismo 5 does look rather orgasmic.

^Sorry to go slightly off-topic but personally, I'm really interested in the B-SPEC mode of Gran Turismo 5, which lets you become a racing stable manager, managing up to 6(or maybe it was 5) drivers during races etc.

Which sounds really fun to me.

Grid looks really ****ing cool. I need to buy that - and Grid 2, if they make it. Hopefully they use all new cars and tracks or something. I always hate that add-on pack feeling (unless it's an add-on pack).

I fell in love with Grid when I got it in a Steam sale about a year back. Codemasters seem to make amazing racers from the little I've seen, but I haven't yet got around to trying a DiRT game. DiRT 3 could be the one to change that as long as the min specs haven't been ramped up too much since Grid.

Their F1 game is looking quite sweet too, although it looks like a purist pleaser and I haven't followed a racing season for like a decade.

Release date - May 2011

So with the last post in this thread nearly a year ago, and the release date fast approaching, here is the latest media on Dirt 3...

Some design walkthrough videos: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/design-walkthrough-dirt-3/710090

When watching the replay (about half way through the video), the physics look good.

Introducing the new Gymkana game-type: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/design-walkthrough-dirt-3/710088

3:33 - The boundary tape gets wrapped up on the car. Nice touch.

interview Paul Coleman the Sr. Game Designer on the game.

The game will be released on [PC, Xbox360, PS3] in May 2011.

In short, an improved version of a good game.

Wonder what they'll make of this, I really liked the racing in Dirt 2 (I used to be all complaining about it, but once I gave it some more time I love it). The physics don't look like they changed a lot to me.

Please Codemasters, make an option to turn off the flashy, unskippable menus/cutscenes. Dirt 2 would be perfect if it had that.

No.

I like the idea of rainy tracks. Especially with the driver seat camera mode. :V :V :V :V

Edit: I thought this was a brand new thread. I had no idea Dirt3 was planned for so long. ;-;
