Disable ATI Smart AI

I got an email from steam support telling me to disable it in order to possibly correct a display problem in Half Life 2, but I don't know how. Can anyone tell me how to disable the ATI Smart AI? I have an ATI Radeon 9250 256 MB DDRAM PCI Video Card and the Catalyst 4.12 with Control Panel (not the Control Center).
