Disabling AutoSave improves things

I have disabled AutoSave and this has reduced stutter somewhat.
Now only a "nanosecond" stutter instead of a full blown Ggggg..GGGGGrrra...Granville episode.

How to disable it?
I tried cl_autosave 0
No help
Autosave = gay!

Make the autosave files read only.
