Just a suggestion, but what do you guys feel about changing it so that posts in the off-topic section don't count towards a user's post count?

I think it might stop many useless threads/flame wars occuring. Not too sure if this suggestion would go down too well by some people though....

Your thoughts?

It'd be a good idea but the problem is it'd be a sh*tload of work for the mods

How would it be a shitload for mods? This is a very good idea imo..

I think the HL2 Discussion forum has way more flaming/spam threads than all of the OT forums combined.

I spend most of my time in the OT forums because I like this community, but I can't stand to spend so much time in the HL2 discussion forum. The HL2 discussion forum is way too reptitive for my tastes.

Removing post counts completely would be a better idea.

Or the previously mentioned in another thread zero tolerence approach. And personally I'd be up for more regular mods constantly viewing threads and deleting individual posts that are even a little bit off topic for that thread. Repeat offenders being banned or prevented from posting in that section.

Cause its gonna get a lot worse in the next few weeks :(

It's only gonna get worse from here on in. I don't think it'll ever get better but I'll try damn you, I'll try!!

/me shakes his banning stick

Just ban everyone. Make it a lot easier then.

Ban
Ban
Ban
!

;D

With everyone complaining about post counts and spamming, why not just make like a 'senior members' sub forum? Since everyone for some reason believes that higher post count means more power then just remove the post counts. In the sub forum be like a HL2 discussion and a off topic, just that. The only people allowed are ones that don't spam, don't act stupid, don't troll, and prove that they are smart and intellectual. To get in just post stuff that is interesting/smart/ontopic, when a mod is strolling through the forums and sees it, they could easily go to their modly powers options and change the person's status/class to 'senior member'(To not intervene with the post count names just make it be like a little star next to it meaning senior). Then that person can talk to other 'senior members' without having to deal with idiot noobs that are just annoying.

P.S. Since I thought of it I get to be the first member. :D

yeah.. its gonna get harder from here on in.. but thats also the reason why Munro should consider more mods for obvious reasons.

u know what i feel might happen because so much influx of new pple? that the current mods at one point or another only be able to do their duties and not be able to enjoy the site/forums like a normal user does.

what does that lead to? well.. lets face it.. even mods are human and get frustrated like anyone else.. and a shortage of staff during a time when a few extra could be used, is the difference between an over-worked mod and a mod devoting quality time and enjoying the site like the rest of us.

just MHO of the coming few weeks.

So if a thread's original topic should shift to something else, the thread should be locked or the "offtopic" posts deleted? And who decides what's on topic and what's not? Last time a mod tried to define offtopic, he deleted messages that were nothing but on topic.

Good point, especially when that's happened in this thread.

Don't you dare start, your messages were contributing absolutely nothing to the topic. Any other staff member would have done the same.

This idea has been thrown around before, and everyone thought it was just be a bad thing to do. Segregation of members of the site would kick up a lot of trouble, moaning and complaining why we haven't chosen others etc. It's just not a productive thing to do.
