My friend is trying to connecting his Dell M6400 laptop with a Quadro FX 3700M videocard via Displayport to HDMI, and for some reason, it'll detect the display, but it never actually transfers over anything. No video, no desktop, absolutely nothing.

We've tried to update the drivers, tried some drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and such, and still absolutely nothing. I'm not really sure what to do.

He has a Displayport to HDMI cable. I haven't really done the research, but I'm assuming it has something to do with the signals not being able to transferred over to the monitor. We're thinking of purchasing a Displayport to HDMI converter to see if that will help or do anything different. We tried this on Windows Vista and Windows 7, and it doesn't seem to be OS specific.

Anyway, give us some ideas. If you need to know anything else, just let me know.

What are you trying to connect the laptop to? LCD? HDTV?
If it's an HDTV I would double check what resolution you are trying to use. It might be picky (1920x1080).

Also, sometimes when adding a second monitor to my desktop systems a restart would get it to actually display after it was setup.

We tried an HDTV and an LCD. The HDTV was the standard 1368x768 or whatever it is and the LCD was 1920x1080. Neither worked.

We tried restarting with it plugged in as well, and that did not work either.

Then why do they make Displayport to HDMI cables? That doesn't make one bit of sense!

I guess because some displayports have a built in converter.

For example, my laptop has a VGA output and I wanted to put it on my HDTV. So I bought a VGA to HDMI cable, but it didn't work. Then I bought a VGA to component cable, but the TV still displayed nothing.

So I looked online, and found that my laptop can't convert the signal, though some can. And I saw that they have converter boxes available. That's probably what you would need.

Well now, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for that. I think he's trying to get the company to send him a converter box.
