distance water

There is a map out called dm_island17. I don't know how many have played it, but its an island surrounded completely by water. Well, the water seems to extend all the way to the horizon, and yet the skybox is actually quite small, extending not very far off the shorline of the island.
So, how does the mapper accomplish this? How do you have water and terrain outside of the map?
 
The guy speaking in that tutorial sounds like a smart-ass. But, I think I got the idea. Thanks.
 
lol i didn't listen to it, i jsut did a quick search and that the first thing good i saw...
 
In one of the example maps (the coast one) valve haven't even used a 3D skybox, they've just used a huge water brush confined by the skybox.
