I think that for a lot of people, it's simply something to have a community around - I'm not involved with bronies in any way, but from what I've seen I think a lot of guys like it simply because it's a positive, funny show which is a bit nerdy and gives them opportunities to meet people on the internet and do chatrooms and forums and conventions and what ever. There're certainly people involved for whom it is a sexual thing, but I think a good analogy is to compare it to Pokemon - there're conventions, message boards, cosplayers, fanfiction, and a small group of people who just wanna ****in bone down on Pikachu.

I can understand liking the visual style of the ponies without it being sexual. I like a lot of cute anime things for being cute.
In the instance of photoshopping ponies into pictures of yourself and pretending they're your girlfriend, I do find it hard to see a sexual attraction not being part of it.
