dll problem

Hi all, I'm obviously here cos I have a prob with HL2, thanx for bearing with me.
I had to reload XP recently and wiped my drive because it was crashing all the time, so far so good, before this I was running HL2 no probs, when I try and reload it I get this message which means fanny adams to me....
This happens even before it starts to install properly

"Error in custom action. The library C:\WINDOWS\048298C9A4D3490B9FF9A9238F3.TMP\WiseCustomCalla4.dll is invalid or
cannot be found"

Can someone tell me what it means and what I need to do about it

BTW I am actually a big fan of HL2 as it runs really well on a mediocre spec pc and is completely absorbing, just want to get it back now

It appears to be a problem with the Windows Installer (I believe that's what WISE is...), but that path looks like it is a temporary directory, which means the files may not be copying properly. I would recommend just installing the game from Steam, or perhaps using the thread you originally created for this exact question.

thanks dt, that might be it as when i try to install quake 2 it hangs for ages then comes up with a critcal error message

perhaps a windows repair install would do the trick.....or maybe make sure windows is all updated to SP2 and such.....

Check your memories as well, if you can download and run memtest would be nice or memtest is installed into your BIOS even better. if you have more than stick of memory test them separately, minimum of four passes.

thanks all, i reinstalled xp and alls fine now, hl2 is bak on and running sweetly
