Steam is integrated into HL2. Or rather HL2 is integrated into Steam.

It's not a matter of "having Steam installed", HL2 is part of Steam and Steam is part of it.

But you will not require an internet connection. In fact you don't currently require an internet connection to use Steam.

You need it at least once. Unless you're talking about CZ of course.

You'll probably need to connect to the internet once in order for your game to be validated, after that you'll be able to play offline to your hearts content. There might be something in the single player SKU that means you don't have to connect.

lol that would be pretty effed up to require the internet for single player. it would screw over lots of people.

Why the heck would they do that ? --

I assumed it'll be llike the original HL1 CD runs, and then when you get Steam on the net it'll run like that.

So basically you should be able to install it, only thing is in the menu there will be no "multiplayer" tab.

Then when you get steam it'll say "use local content files for installation?" like it does for HL1 and mods right now so you dont gotta reinstall it.

At least that's the most logical way

No there will be the abillity to play offline, without even having steam. Well there would be no point in a singleplayer version only if not.

It'll probably be like CS:CZ with the steam gui and stuff, and when you're ready you can make a gcf out of it to use in your steam installation.

Steam will be integated into it as many people have said. PC Gamer said that valve was unsure to make people register online via steam. This would be to try to prevent illegal copies from being played.

I haven't heard if they have decided either way.

There've been a lot of worries about this. Valve will work out a way.

There is no way to work out. It's unacceptable to force users to connect to the internet if they want to play HL2 SP. It will be the same as in other games.

Stop whining people

Oh, the irony...

i really don't see how he was whining in his post. might wanna look at the definition of irony Link?

I've figured that single player only version was for non-internet type dudes.

It won't require steam and you can happily play oblivious to bug fixes and multiplayer till the end of your days.

EDIT: I've emailed Valve about this a few times over the last few months and have had no response. So far i know of no official source as to what the **** is going with steam, online registration etc. They're keeping very hush hush about it all.

i·ro·ny
n. pl. i·ro·nies

The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. See Synonyms at wit1.

Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: “Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated” (Richard Kain).
An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity. See Usage Note at ironic.
Dramatic irony.
Socratic irony.

He is complaining about about being forced to do something that
a. He won't be forced to do anyway
b. He will have no problem doing (He posted that post???)
and importantly he did it in a childish fashion.

Thus whining and thus ironic. :smoking:

If the game requires steam to play, then I am a lost customer. PERIOD. That's all there is to it. This matter is not up for debate.

Your loss.

Edit: to above post...it was a joke. ;)

so was mine :p

To the steam complaining dood, why would you be lost as a customer? Why miss out on the best game ever (in my opinion)?

haha, the comment about will you be wearing it in red shoes, and if your name was gordon would you talk... first thing that made me laugh on these forums for a long time.

speaking of irony isnt it ironic that your telling him to look up the meaning when youve clearly not understood?

yeah that is your loss. steam is built into hl2, its the front end of the game. you can watch the videos released recently and you can see them loading up hl2 on the monitor and it has the steam front end like what we currently see when loading up any of our current hl1 related games.

if you choose to not use steam you wont be playing hl2....ever and "this matter is not up for debate" - so if your not gona play hl2 theres probably not much point of you sticking around on these forums - cya.

Oh god.... people back on topic.

The brits are the master of all Comic and Ironic property so just leave it to us.

In other news.

I hated Steam, it ate my HL1 CD key and my CS cd key.

then i got off my arse an bought the generations pack again, works like a charm now.

Why is Steam still such a big problem for everyone now? It started off very badly, but has been getting far better over the months and is currently in a very nice, very working, very impressive state.

I concur. During the Steam beta it was absolutely horrific. Now I'd consider it one of the best leaps in online gaming to date. It makes everything so much easier and so much smoother.

One day all games will work that way. Mark my words.

I think looking at this might give some pause for thought, I know it did for me (And I'm pro steam)
