:hmph: I don't OC mines, but I do expirement...well you can say I do, but only for a brief amount of time. I'll overclock then play a little bit just to see how much performance gain I get.
But if you are make sure you have good a good power supply what I do is I research in a google or yahoo search about what others attain(speeds) with the same card, then I would work my way up to around those ranges. Oh, yeah make sure you have good cooling too...always gotta have the cooling.
I overclocked my GeForce 3 once a very long time ago. Sadly, due to the combined heat, dust, and poor ventilation, the card actually caught fire and was burned alive (it wasn't quite that dramatic).
Then again, this was quite a while ago and I had no idea what I was doing.
If your going to do it, make sure your system is prepared to handle the extra stress, and your card is ready for the extra heat. Don't overdue it either, small steps are smart ones.
hahahah.... that was probly funny... watching smoke come outa your computer hahahah... my computers full of dust... when i have it upgraded im guna make the guy get about 5 cans of compressed air and dust it out... no i dont over clock...i got 1 intake and 1 exit fan... my CPU is jammed in a very sad spot in the topright cornor just behind the PSU... thares a book in the bottom of my computer and i got no idea what its thare for... never took it out i figured it was supporting something
Just my CPU is running oc'ed now (1.4 tot 2.2 GHz) but my GPU is plenty fast as it is, I'm not going to take any risk with that (has a really cheapish looking fan too, I'm not going to trust on that thing)
overclocking is pretty safe if you ask me....there is always some headroom built into a chip.
I once accidentally clocked my 9700pro at 1000+mhz core and about 800mhz mem....
it still works fine.... of course i dont know that those settings actaully took effect ...they could have been blocked by failsafes to prevent my comp from exploding.
when overclocking say a pentium 4 2.6ghz (2.67) 533fsb to a 2.8-3.0g (I have no idea how realistic that would be)
does the cpu actually perform as good as the speed it is overclocked to?
and does it really make that much difference?
what kinds of framerate improvements are you people getting, like specifically... did you go from 10fps to 30fps? 60-61? some kind of gauge for judgement would be nice.
I only ask because Im thinking of getting my lil bro some more ram, and if it really makes a huge diff, skip on the CPU and just overclock his 2.6ghz
