I'm thinking of growing dreadlocks. I want a maintenance-free hairdo, so I usually shave my head. But I have to do this every 3 weeks or so. They say with dreadlocks once you get them started, they are almost maintenance free (except for washing ofcourse). I also think they look good.

What do you think?

washing dredds is a pain in the arse... they tend to trap nasty bits within the knotted strands.

:| ... How do you get nasty bits in your hair in the first place?

i think they look like shit, but everyone to there own, you can get them and i wouldnt care the slightest.

I thought the whole point of dreadlocks is that you never have to wash it again.

There are two different versions of dreadlocks. One is natural -- you simply don't wash your hair and they form naturally over time. Another is to use wax and make them yourself. This ends up as more neat and tidy, but they require a lot of maintenance.

I've ben told I would look good with dreads. I was thinking of getting some.

I think shaving your head is a lot easier in the end if you compare it with dreads.
No way dreads contribute to a healthy headskin and they can be painful as well

What? Deadcrocks in you hair? Is this about rastas?

I'm all for well-kept dreadlocks, not filthy hippy dreadlocks. I'm a fan of Zac Delaroacha's (sp?) and Munky's dreadlocks. I'm actually growing my hair pretty long before I even get dreadlocks myself.

Dreadlocks are awesome, especially on the Predator and black dudes :D

Seriously, they found worms in Jimmy Hendrix's hair... I can't remember if it was him, but that's what I've heard!
One of my friends had dreadlocks 3-4 years ago, and I must say...they were quite stinky! Whenever he had been over, I opened my window! If I remember correctly, he didn't wash his hair in a year! His hair was extremely dry, and almost crunchy!

how bout just regularly growing your hair and cutting every 4 months or so?

worked for me for the past 16 years... and doesn't look worse than dreads ;P

Let's get this straight here and now:

Dreadlocks will only be smelly and unclean if you chose the natural way of getting them i.e. by not washing your hair at all.

This causes them to form over time, but only works with curly or wavy hair. That is why Bob Marley probably had worms -- his dreadlocks formed naturally, and were unclean; that's why they were so uneven and messy. This method is not good for your scalp. It is also the same method your friend probably took as well, which explains why they stank so much. This sort of method is maintenance-free, but unhealthy.

Another way of getting dreadlocks is to use wax or something similar (an option people with straight hair are forced to take, because they cannot obtain dreads the alternate way), and make them yourself in an hour or two. Beleive me, these types of dreadlocks require a lot of maintenance, and one of these is washing them on a regular basis. If you opt for this method, your scalp will be quite clean and healthy if they are properly maintained, and you will not smell because of having dreadlocks. These types of dreads tend to fall out and unweave themselves if you don't take care of them, especially in the first few weeks you have them. If you take care of them, they will last for as long as you want them to.

If you are not black, no need for dreadlocks, because they look retarded on a white person.

i like some girls that have dreadlocks. if they've got a 'V' shaped jawline then girls with dreads look gorgeous. not really bothered if blokes get it done...if you like it then go for it.
