I don't drink or smoke, and have been accused on several occasions of thinking that I am morally superior to those who do. The thing is, I don't think I am superior to anyone. I just don't drink because I don't like to. I won't deny I tasted beer when I was like 10 years-old, but it tasted so bad I never cared to try it again. You guys know what I am talking about?

People who think that are jackasses...

NOTE: both the people who think you believe you're better than them... and the people who think they're better than others... are jackasses.

Badly phrased question, but i know what you mean. When i was a teenager, my dad was so proud that i didnt drink or smoke, as did family friends, in fact any adult that i discussed this with. I earned alot of respect from people i didnt even know.

In some ways i feel more mature and respectable, but i dont think people that drink or smoke are pond scum or anything. I do have a few drinks when i go out, but only to be social. I dont like beer, i prefer Strongbow, but i drink it as its become social to do so, not because i want to.

huh, i would think it would be the other way around. People who drink and smoke think they are better because they have more life experience

no that's not what I am trying to say. Let's put it this way.

Some people who drink think those who don't drink have superiority feelings.

Some of those who don't drink are aware that some who drink think that of them.

So, do you think those who don't drink think that way about the thoughts of those who drink?

I think that people who drink get the feeling from people who don't drink that people who drink think that non-drinkers shouldn't make confusing ass threads about it and have themselves a drink instead. But that's just what I think.

People always feel superior for some reason or another because others don't share exactly the same way of life. Sometimes justifiably, sometimes not.

I never used to drink or smoke. Now I do both, but only ever at the same time. I enjoy a cigarette or cigar with a beer on a Friday night, but no other time.

I don't think people look down on me. Partly because in today's youth, not drinking is frowned upon by peers.

Damnt, I hate it when people think that being clean makes them superior people.

It doesn't. It's just your choice. You personally chose to not smoke or drink, and I hope that you do it because you don't want to smoke or drink. Not because you think it makes you a better person.

I'll be perfectly honest and say I don't care to be around people who don't drink/smoke. Not to claim some kind of high ground, but I'm just not compatible with a lot of them. Most of the ones I've met are too conservative to be any fun and I've gotten quite a few lectures about what I decide to put into my body.

I can see why people smoke, or at least started smoking (but addiction takes care of the rest). I don't think i'm better in any way, I just value my health and was lucky in that my friends at the time had the same views on smoking as I did, so got past that phase.

With regard to drinking, I'm not sure I understand the question. There's no harm in enjoying a beer / wine / etc every now and then, so why would you / how could you be accused of thinking you're better than anyone because you choose not to?

... Or do you mean people that get absolutely ratted every weekend for the sake of it? In which case, that's a lifestyle choice same as the smoking one. Some people like it, including me, although i'm too old to manage it every weekend. I think the only people I look down on in this regard is those that can't handle themselves when they're drunk - i.e. people that start fights with lamp posts or throw bottles at windows.

From my drinking experience, the only time people do that, is when they are pretending they're more drunk than they actually are, just for attention.

Or just assholes with their inhibitions removed.

I've been so hammered that I woke up lying in the road of a gated community with a cup of bourbon in my hand, all alone, not having much of an idea about how I got there.

But I have never, ever, been so drunk that i've lost so much of my inhibitions that I started talking to random objects.

Do you think that people think that think they think they're better than you think you think you are but when they think, you think about what they're thinking and think?

A lot of people who don't drink think they're better than those who don't

Pisses me off really, although two of my best mates don't drink at all for personal reasons..fact of the matter is though, they're fine despite the fact they don't drink, a lot of others who don't are right mardy twats, and just sit on the wall, and ****ing silently judge everyone else

**** em, the ****s.
:)

i hate the people that go to parties and try to "rescue" people when they are even really drunk....and the next day the make it sound like they are hereos for saving everybody.

I've known plenty of self-righteous pricks who do drink, and plenty of completely cool people that don't. It all depends on the person.

yeah i have to say, as much as i know it's not true, i do feel kind of superior to people who don't drink or take drugs. i mean, it's fun, why not do it?

I do feel a lot more superior to people who take drugs, but not for drinking and smoking. I have a lot of mates but I think hardly any of us smoke but we all love to drink, but we would only get completely wasted on a special occasion as we see it as some sort of tradition and it is fun to do (like in the past few months there have been a lot of 18ths), other than that we just have a few whilst playing some pool or darts down the pub. There is nothing wrong with smoking I feel its people decision to smoke if they want to, but i am physically active and I do value my health so i choose not to smoke. But looking in the opposite direction, i would never dream of slating someone who doesn't drink either, whoever the person is.

Well I for one love the taste of beer....but smoking I don't screw with that. I don't feel superior to those who smoke when they smoke by me and I'm not smoking with them. I mean it's their choice to smoke and I'm not gonna judge them for it it's that simple, just as long as it's not blowing in my face I'm fine with it.

If you don't drink and smoke you are likely to be superior
-You are likely to be healthier
-You are likely to have a higher willpower
-You are likely to have more money (you havn't wasted it on alcohol and cigarettes)

Or you are likely to have low resistance to alcohol and nicotine.

If I liked beer, I'd probably drink it. But I don't like it, so why should I force myself to drink something that tastes bad just to please my friends? If they can't accept me sober then they are probably not my friends in the first place. As for smoking, I can barely breath. I don't need to put smoke into my lungs. As for doing drugs, like snorting coke or injecting morphine , I am too cheap to afford those delicacies. I am glad I'm that cheap though. That way I know I'll never get addicted because I'll never even have the chance to get started!

Title asks if you think people who don't drink/smoke think that you think that they are better than you.

Your title and post conflict, I'm confused.

Jelly, what I really meant to ask is,

whether you think people who don't drink/smoke think that you think that they think that you think that they think you are better than them? Well, to be honest with you, I don't even understand my question anymore. I thought it made sense when I wrote it. It's just a question about being paranoid about other people being paranoid about you. Something like that.

QFT.

you're also likely to be less friendly and sociable

If you smoked and quit then you have a higher willpower. If you've never smoked at all then you wouldn't know would you? I mean if you were raised in a society without cigarettes or alcohol do you automatically have higher willpower? What about people who grew up with parents and friends that don't smoke or drink. They would never be tempted, so do they have higher willpower than anyone else?

i think those sentiments are largely due to a lot of people being self-righteous, arrogant shitfaces when they don't drink (OMG sXe FOR EVER!!!!1) to people who do.

Less sociable my ass.

Can we please stop stating homegrown "facts" and start laying down some truth. We say that the government-run programs are warping are minds when we're just as bad.

Let's see. My mom smokes a pack a day, and so does my dad. My dad also drinks on a regular basis. But I don't smoke and I don't drink. Do I have high will power? No. I don't drink and I don't smoke because I don't find those habits tempting. I also saw at a very young age several alcoholics on my mom's side of the family which must have dissuaded me, to some extent, from drinking alcohol.

I think it is very short-sighted of drinkers to say that non-drinkers have very high will power. Either that, or perhaps non-drinkers never developed an addiction that they struggled against and won.

As for non-drinkers/non-smokers being less friendly and sociable, a person with high social skills should be able to maintain his high social status in spite of not drinking and not smoking. It's the ones who are desperately trying to fit in the ones who do things they don't really want to do just to be part of the group.
